The Up Close & Personal rule set is all about melee units. You'll want to focus on powerful frontline attackers and strong tanks if you want to succeed. It's a good rule set for anyone who likes direct combat and a simple brawl without too much strategy to mind. It can be tough if you're not prepared so here's a battle that could give you an idea on what units you can use when you encounter this rule set.
This Week's Theme is…
Only Units with Melee attack may be used in battles.
Up Close & Personal is a straightforward match but it really tests your knowledge on what melee units are best suited for that battle. While Fire element units combined with Tarsa is still the best in this rule set, Uriel the Purifier is one of the outlanders that can be strong regardless of his summoner.

Battle Strat: This battle is very simple. Pick Uriel the Purifier and wait until I win. Earth, Life and Neutral elements does not have any melee units with Affliction to counter his Heal so it would be hard to fight against Uriel the Purifier but Uriel the Purifier has Armor advantage as well giving him the clear choice. The other units are just there to fill the mana slot but even if I only used Uriel, I think I would've won with no problem.
Battle Summary: The opponent's Quora Towershead is actually a good choice but the problem is Uriel the Purifier's Recharge does triple damage inflicting 12 in one shot. Since Quora Towershead was not able to dodge this attack, she died in one hit putting me in a clear winning position at round 2.
Lineup and Strategy
Why pick this summoner: With her summoner tactics, I was able to choose between Heal and speed to give to my units. Since Uriel the Purifier already have Heal, I went and gave him and Uraeus the extra speed instead. This played a vital role since this extra speed assured the hit on Quora Towershead killing her on round 2.
|| Has a 25% bonus chance of evading Melee or Ranged attacks from Units who do not have the flying ability.
|| This Unit attacks every other round but does 3x damage.
|| Restores a third of the max health to this Unit's health each round.
|| When this Unit dies, it does 1 damage to all enemy Units.
Why pick this unit: With a solid combination of Heal, Flying, and Recharge, Uriel brings strong melee power and resilience to the battle. That 4 melee damage becomes monstrous with the Recharge ability for triple the damage (12 damage) and the healing keeps him alive in longer fights. The only catch is that due to Recharge, he was only able to attack once every other round so each hit is important.
|| Targets the last Unit on the enemy Team instead of the first Unit.
|| Attacks have a 50% chance to apply poison, which does automatic damage to the target at the beginning of each round after the poison is applied.
Why pick this unit: Uraeus is a reliable melee attacker with Sneak and Poison. The Sneak ability is especially useful in this battle as it allows Uraeus to target the backline. Poison adds a nice touch of extra damage.
|| Targets the last Unit on the enemy Team instead of the first Unit.
Why pick this unit: Stitch Leech is just Uraeus for Life. At high level, he can be resillient due to Life Leech and high melee sneak attacks but at low level, he's just there to fill some mana.
|| Units with the Opportunity ability may attack from any position and will target the enemy Unit with the lowest health.
Why pick this unit: Mad Ogre Anarchist’s Opportunity ability gives him the flexibility to attack low health units in the enemy lineup. His damage is okay since he's only a level 1 but he also comes with 2 armor which boosts his survivability especially since melee units will be striking the armor first before the health.
|| Has a 25% bonus chance of evading Melee or Ranged attacks from Units who do not have the flying ability.
|| Units with the Opportunity ability may attack from any position and will target the enemy Unit with the lowest health.
Why pick this unit: Celestial Harpy was just to fill the extra mana. He's not really strong but is good enough to remove any possible 1 armor from the opponent's units to make sure Uriel the Purifier will hit the Health and not the armor.
Summary
This lineup is very simple and actually, I didn't even need to think a lot about it. Uriel the Purifier's the best melee unit in Life and as long as she wouldn't miss, I will have no problem in Up Close & Personal rule set. The summoner tactics is a nice touch as I can choose the ability after seeing my opponent's lineup. If the enemy has some firepower focused on Sneak, I probably will choose Heal instead of Speed and put that Heal to Mad Ogre Anarchist to delay the damage at the back. It's a nice mechanic which is very advantageous if you know what you are doing.
