Rise of the Commons: Unleashing Arkemis the Bear's Full Potential

This post was made as entry for Splinterlands Social Media Challenge.

What kind of strategy works best when your choices are limited to Common and Rare units? Does this rule set push players to be more creative or just limit their options?

Rise of the Commons is actually pretty balanced because it forces you to rely on units that are typically more affordable but still have solid abilities. It levels the playing field in many ways but it can be a bit frustrating if you're used to using Epic and Legendary units. While it may be hard to get used to it at first, you will get used to it through experience.

This Week's Theme is…

Battle Factors

Mana: 31
Active Elements: Fire, Water, Earth, Life,

|| Only Common and Rare Units may be used in battles.
  • The Rise of the Commons Rule Set makes the battle more interesting since it focuses only on Common and Rare.
  • || All Units have 2 Armor in addition to their normal Armor stat.
  • Armored Up Rule Set adds an extra layer of defense to all units making it easier to last longer if you're against melee and range units but it doesn't help when your enemy use magic damage.

Battle Strat: Double down on Armored Up rule set by adding Protect on top of it. With Arkemis the Bear, not only you can get extra armor with Protect, his stats also help on being an amazing tank even though he doesn't have any Shield or Void. Goblin Psychic helps Arkemis the Bear survive through Tank Heal while reducing enemy's magic damage through Silence. Regal Peryton defends the team against potential Sneak whie Madcap Magus helps with damage on the back line.
Battle Summary: I had a level advantage so my units had better stats and more abilities overall. The armor was useless in this battle since the enemies were all using magic attacks which ignore armor completely. Luckily, Arkemis the Bear’s high health worked perfectly with Goblin Psychic’s Tank Heal ability allowing it to recover 4 health every round keeping it in the fight until the end.

    Lineup and Strategy

    || All friendly Monsters have +1 Magic damage.

Why pick this summoner: This is a decent pick in a magic heavy lineup since Obsidian raises the magic damage of the whole team which could overwhelm defenses. A strong tank is still needed but it's a good way to play if you're concerned against high armored enemies.

    || All friendly units gain +2 Armor.
    || The first time this Unit hits a target, that target's attack is cut in half (rounded up).
    || This Unit takes only 1 damage from attacks with power 5 or higher.
    || This Unit has 50% bonus Melee attack and Speed when not at full health.
Why pick this unit: With 12 health and strong abilities like Forcefield and Protect, Arkemis the Bear is a tanky unit perfect for absorbing damage while also boosting your team’s armor. The Halving ability is a great tool to control your enemy's damage as it cuts the enemy's attack making Arkemis even harder to take down. Enrage also means it can become a fast and hard hitting unit when damaged making it quite a threat.

    || Restores a third of max health to the Unit in the first position each round.
    || When this unit hits a target, it has a 50% chance of applying Affliction on the target causing it to be unable to be healed.
    || Reduces the Magic attack of all enemy Units by 1.
    || When this Unit hits an enemy, it clears all positive status effects on that enemy.
Why pick this unit: Goblin Psychic is a powerful support unit with the ability to heal your front line while also debuffing enemies with Silence. Silence is particularly effective against magic heavy teams reducing their damage while Affliction can prevent enemies from healing giving you a good advantage.

    || Ranged and Magic attacks hit a random enemy target.
    || Unit's health increases each time it damages an enemy Unit's health by half the damage dealt.
    || When this unit hits a target, it has a 50% chance of applying Affliction on the target causing it to be unable to be healed.
    || When this Unit hits an enemy, it clears all positive status effects on that enemy.
Why pick this unit: Madcap Magus with Scattershot is unpredictable but adds pressure to the enemy since it can hit any target. If you can be lucky, you can eliminate a key unit from your enemies. Life Leech lets it gain health as it deals damage making it more durable the longer the fight drags on.

    || Has a 25% bonus chance of evading Melee or Ranged attacks from Units who do not have the flying ability.

Why pick this unit: Regal Peryton is a speedster with 7 speed and 3 magic damage making it hard to hit and dangerous. Its Flying ability gives it an extra dodge chance making it even tougher for melee and ranged attackers to land hits. Overall a fantastic choice for harassing enemies while protecting your team against potential sneaks.

    Summary

With Rise of the Commons limiting choices to Common and Rare units, the battle will be all about using know how for efficient cards like Goblin Psychic and Regal Peryton. Earth element is really good in this scenario because a chunk of their core lineup are Common and Rare Units. Based on the tips I read, another option would be Water units with Diemonshark and Deeplurker as your core. I didn't use it because I'm more comfortable with magic damage and I feel like using non-magic units put me in a disadvantage at fights.
