On my last post I tried a slightly different approach which was to write about a battle that I fought but in a more dramatized way as if I was telling a story of a real battle but still discussing things such as lineup, strategy and so on. I enjoyed writing it very much so I decided to do it once again.
This time I will be talking about this battle. I hope you enjoy this different way of describing the battles! All feedback is appreciated so don't hesitate to leave a comment with your opinion.
Storm of arrows
I was hesitant to let General Sloan command the fortress defences against the incoming attack. It's not that I don't trust her, but I'm not the biggest fan of her battle style.
However, most of my commanders were out carrying on other missions and Tarsa, the only other commander available, was still recovering from her last raid, so, reluctantly, I let Sloan lead our stand.
The ruleset
The gods were in a strange mood that day and, while they granted all soldiers the ability to trample over their enemies multiple times, they also reversed their speed.
That was actually useful for the General as her army, which is not usually made of the fastest enemies, was greatly benefited by that favour of the gods.
The battlefield
I may not like Sloan's battle style, but one thing is undeniable: she is very clever and experienced, knowing exactly how to make the best not only of her men but also of the terrain and everything surrounding the battlefield.
She knew that the enemy would come mostly from land and, having the higher ground, she positioned some of her best archers to give us the upper hand.
The lineup
Shieldbearer
Our defences would mostly come from the deadly arrows launched by our archers on the top of our walls, but we would still need someone to pin the enemy down while the raining steel reduces them to a pool of blood, so Sloan assigned Shieldbearer, the mighty Paladin, to hold the enemy's troops. His sharp defensive skills and his taunt ability would keep the enemy busy long enough for our backline to take care of them.
Venari Crystalsmith
The Crystalsmith plays a very important role in this composition as she will help punish our enemies with wrath and arrows and also help Shieldbearer's stand with her unique Tank Heal ability.
Portal Spinner
The next in line is the Portal Spinner, a deadly archer who works in mysterious ways. Thanks to her Scattershot ability, her arrows are as deadly as they are unpredictable and you can never tell where they are aiming.
Pelacor Arbalest
Don't be fooled by his angelical appearance. Pelacor Arbalest is one of the fiercest fighters you will ever see. His Double Strike move will kill his enemies before they even realize what is going on.
Djinn Renova
Renova is one of the few magic users in Sloan's army, but she makes any leader wish they could have more of her. Her powerful magic strike can make short work of most enemies and her Strengthen ability will make the whole troop more resistant by increasing everyone's health.
Stitch Leech
This sneaky has a very sharp bite and can often go unnoticed around the enemy troops, hitting their backline when they least expect it.
The enemy
Our troops were in place and it didn't take long for us to see the enemy.
The first monster on their line was a Scorch Fiend, but we knew it was merely a distraction. The true leader of that army was right behind it: The mighty Grum Flameblade!
I must admit that seeing that fearsome warrior made me uneasy but there was nothing more that I could do other than trust Sloan made the right decisions.
The enemy also had Tenyii Striker, Gargoya Devil, Djinn Apprentice and Scavo Firebolt.
Their battle plan was simple: overwhelm us with sheer brute force and conquer the fortress as quickly as possible!
I could feel the tension in the air, but when I turned to Sloan she looked very confident. I think I even saw a smirk for a split second, and that put me at ease.
The battle
As expected, there was no ceremony of any kind. As soon as the enemy troops were in charging range, we heard Grum's dreaded battle cry and saw the enemy run towards our gates.
They came in a savage wave of chaos and destruction but Sloan never lost her calm. She seemed to hesitate for a moment but she was actually only waiting for the right time. When the enemy got close enough, Sloan said "NOW" and suddenly, our trap was put in place.
Our ranged fighters, who were hiding behind the fortress walls, showed themselves and made it rain hell fire and steel. At the same time, the front gate was opened just enough to allow the mighty Shieldbearer to go through.
He was out just in time to meet the enemy's Scorch Fiend and made short work of it with a single blow.
But then, the real battle began.
Immediately after Shieldbearer defeated the Fiend, he found himself facing the fearsome Grum Fireblade. Many brave warriors would have run in this situation, but not Shieldbearer. He graciously lowered his shield for a moment, inviting the enemies to come at him, which they did.
The entire enemy army charged against Shieldbearer but, aided by the holy Crystalsmith, he held his ground blow after blow. Meanwhile, our archers, mage and the leech brought hell to our enemies.
Grum realized he had fallen into our trap, but it was already too late for him to do anything, so he did the one thing he was good at: he fought.
The giant orc was the most obvious target, so our troops concentrated most of our firepower on him. I must admit I was impressed that he was still standing after so many hits. But even the mighty Grum still bleeds like the rest of us and a couple of bolts by Pelacor Arbalest finally ended Fireblade's last stand.
With their leader gone, the rest of our enemies was lost and disorganized, and, one by one, they fell to our storm of arrows.
Victory was ours and not a single life was lost on our side!
As the troops celebrated their great victory, I approached Sloan and said: "I misjudged you, General. You have proven your worth."
She just nodded and went to join her men for the celebration.
