Weekly Battle Challenge: Back to Basics

in #splinterlands2 years ago

Introduction

Hello everyone! This weeks Weekly Battle Challenge resolves around the Back to Basics ruleset. I must admit that Back to Basics is one of the rulesets I simply don't enjoy - maybe because I don't play the Earth Element, which is dominant in this ruleset because of all the Magic attacking cards. Both Obsidian and Immortalis are excellent choices in this ruleset because of the +1 Magic and Void buffs they provide.

Featured Ruleset:

This Ruleset is pretty self-explanatory - all of the monsters lose all of their abilities. Most monsters rely on their abilities for success in battles, but there are some that have exceptional stats for their mana cost and none of the abilities. A great example is the Cruel Sethropod, which provides a lot of health and armor for only 3 mana. Other than those types of monsters, monsters with Magic attacks are very dominant in this ruleset.

Featured battle allowed all of the elements to be played, with 19 mana to be spent. The ruleset combination was completed with Fire & Regret and Taking Sides rulesets.

My Team:

Quix the Devious is my favorite summoner for low mana battles since he provides a point of speed manipulation and provides great flexibility in choosing your team. There is always the possibility of surprise when you go with a Dragon summoner, which can be deadly for the opposing Battle Mage.

Pelacor Deceiver is a great cheap frontline tank. It is my go-to tank for Back to Basics ruleset since he has 10 health with 5 speed and 3 Melee damage for only 5 mana.

Corpse Fiend provides additional body to take a hit before the rest of my lineup - which consists of Magic and Ranged attackers.

Revealer was chosen because of the 2 Magic damage for 4 mana.

Bonesmith was chosen for the same reason as Reveler - 2 Magic damage for 4 mana.

Naga Assassin is my auto-include in low mana battles in which Dragon cards are available. In this particular battle, she provides 2 Ranged damage for only 2 mana.

Gameplan

The idea behind my team is to deal as much damage as possible with 19 mana. I was able to set up a team that does 9 damage per round. A good chunk of that damage was Magic damage, which is preferred since it bypasses any armor.

Battle Link

Turn 1

In the first turn of the battle, my team was able to defeat the opposing Frontliner - Hill Giant. My tank still stands with 1 health point remaining.

Turn 2

In the second round of the battle both my Pelacor Deceiver and Corpse Fiend were defeated. The opponent lost Fungus Fiend and Regal Peryton took some damage.

Turn 3

This is the last turn of the battle and it played perfectly. Naga Assassin was faster and delivered the killing blow to Regal Peryton. Venari Bonesmith defeated Djinn Biljka and Revelaer defeated Madcap Magus.

Battle Rewards

Since this was a Tournament battle, I received 3 points for the win in the Tournament rankings instead of the SPS battle rewards.

In the end, I was able to score 13 wins with 9 losses in total, which surprisingly put me in the 32nd spot.

As you can see 32nd spot in this Diamond League Tournament rewarded me with fame and glory, but with 50 SPS as well.

Conclusion

The Back to Basics ruleset is one of my least favorite rulesets, but sometimes the battle just ends up going in your favor. In showcased battle, that's exactly what happened - my team was slightly faster than opposing monsters due to Quix's point of speed manipulation and had the exact amount of damage needed to finish the opposition before being attacked back.

Winning 50 SPS was amazing and I'll definitely continue participating in Diamond League Tournaments!
