Sadly just buying a spellbook won't get you far anymore. They recently made a change that heavily nerfed the low tier league earnings. You no longer get crypto in that league and get a decreased chance of getting cards. That being said, the game is still 100% worth investing in but you're gonna need a little more time and investment than previously.
I'm in the lowest league that offers crypto and I'm earning around 15-20 cents per win which is pretty incredible for a low league. Then you also get rewards from daily and season chests which can contain crypto or cards. The card I got in this post is worth $37 which is why I was psyched lol.
To top things all of, you get SPS crypto for holding splinterlands assets. In the two months I've been playing I've been airdropped over $200 worth of SPS tokens.
Most importantly the game is so god damn fun! Getting crypto is just icing on the cake for a game that I enjoy playing as is.
