The 2018 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XXIII Olympic Winter Games started this weekend in Pyeongchang, South Korea.

Pyeongchang was selected as the host city in July 2011, yes, that long ago. It takes a lot of time to prepare for the Olympics. Think of all the stadiums they must build and the Olympic village for the sporters, the roads, the transport etc. etc. It takes also a lot of time to train all the volunteers and very important to take all the necessary safety measures.

For us Dutch, the skating is very important. We have no real tradition in winter games. We do have winters of course, but we are lucky nowadays when there is ice on our lakes. We have no mountains, so no tradition in winter sports like skiing.

But, we Dutch, do like to skate and when there is ice, we go ice skating. Young, older and old, if you can go, you go!

The Dutch team officially consists of 33 athletes. The skating team has twenty names, the short track team has ten names, there are three sporters on the snowboarding team and one woman has qualified for the skeleton.

Our team started very wrong. Sadly enough one of our three snowboarders fell during the last training. He is a young lad of only seventeen and this had to be his first Olympics. He broke his arm, so no slopestyle and big air for him.

But yesterday was a great day for us. A relative outsider by the women speed skating won gold at the 3000 meters. And that was not all, also no 2 and no 3 were Dutch women.

no. 1 Carlijn Achtereekte, no. 2 Ireen Wust and no.3 Antoinette de Jong

Also yesterday our Sjinkie Knegt won silver at the short track 1500 meter game.

This Sunday morning the 5000 meter for speed skaters was due. We had three men taking part. Sven Kramer won gold at the last two Olympic Games, and this morning he won gold again. No one ever did that before!!

So at this moment, we have already 2 golden, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal. We are momentary nr. 1 in the number of medals.

It will not stay that way I know that of course, we do not participate in all the other sports like curling, ski jumping and all the other skiing competitions, biathlon, ice hockey, luge, bobsled and figure skating.

But for now, we Dutch are really proud of our men and women!

Have a nice sporting day,
Clio

It was so sad for him. I also hope he will recover soon. He is young enough for the next Olympics!

Yes, your athletes are good fellows, a very good start, especially ahead of another 14 days. Thank you for an interesting article. I am happy to follow the events.

Thank you, I am also happy. Our skaters are very good, I am glad for them.

Glad to know that Dutch performance is the most dominant by any nation in Winter Olympics so far...

Yes, you are right, so far we are dominant, but I know it can change already today.

So proud of the Dutch! What an achievement for such a small country!

At last, we have again something to be proud of as a nation!

Oh yes, this is an excellent achievement and these victories are very significant, as they are achieved at the Olympic Games! I congratulate you and all the Dutch in the victories of your athletes! Thank you Clio

Thank you for the compliment for the Dutch athletes. I have only watched and I am also proud of them.

These fruits work hard. I love this type of sport even though I have not practiced it before. have a good day @clio

In the Netherlands, almost all children, even small ones, did learn to skate. When it is not possible outside, they learn inside in special sports halls.

Yay us!

Football is the most important sport in the Netherlands. Only a very few people play cricket here. That is more a typical sport for Britain and countries like India. Where are you from?
