Liverpool defender, Dejan Lovren, is optimistic with his Champions League team's chances. Moreover, the Reds underdog status in this competition.
After two years of absence, Liverpool finally returned to appear in the Champions League, a competition that has won them five times. But, if dirunut ten years back, this is their second appearance.
Unlike in the 2014/2015 season in which Liverpool immediately ran aground in the group stages, the team raised by Juergen Klopp qualify for the last 16 of the Champions League. Facing Porto, Liverpool performed superbly in the first leg when they won 5-0 two days ago.
The victory which sparked the confidence of the players to look at the next matches in this competition. Even being a champion is not something impossible.
"Why not? Of course (we want Champions League champions)," Lovren said as quoted by Soccerway.
"Obviously we have to stay on track at the moment and look good as it is today, defend well - every inch of the field - so we have a big chance to qualify for the next round, I would like to take it one step at a time."
Lovren is not without reason of course to say so because Liverpool have the sharpest attack line this season with 28 goals, then there are three players on the topskorer list, and Loris Karius so one of the goalkeepers with the most cleansheet.
Even so, basically the public more candidate teams like Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain, Barcelona, Manchester United, Manchester City, or Juventus as a champion candidate.
"It would be good if the public did not talk about us (as a champion), maybe they were more stronger teams - that's better for us.
"I can say we are underdogs, I'm glad when people think that way about us."
"There will be something that can sparkle our performance, but we have to be calm now and there is still a second game in our cage, then we see what it looks like," added the Croatian.
