Candidacy

The county of Pieonchang (Gangwon, South Korea) was chosen in 2009 by the Korean Olympic Committee (KOC) as a national candidate for the XXIII Olympic Winter Games of 2018. The project had the support of Gangwon Province , which in recent years had organized international events such as the Asian Winter Games of 1999, the Four Continents Skating Championships of 2005 and the 2009 Biathlon World Championships. Pieonchang had already presented without success for the 2010 editions and 2014.

The candidature bet on grouping the organization into two large complexes: the ski resort of Alpensia - open-air tests - and the coastal city of Gangneung - Olympic Park and four pavilions - connected to each other half an hour away by road, and 50 minutes from Seoul in a future high-speed train. Seven of the 13 facilities were already built, and a good part of the scheduled ones would have temporary use, including the Olympic Stadium.
