Swimming is a sport of motion in water. As an organized sport, swimming is an invention of the youngest ages. It is one of the first activities that man has experimented on the earth and used for his entertainment. Ancient Greeks considered swimming as a really useful skill and it was a bad thing if someone didn't know how to swim. In the 1896 Olympic Games of Athens, it was included as a special sport and swimming has since become one of the most beloved events. In the 1924 Olympic Games of Paris, Jonny Weissmuller ( who's nickname was Tarzan) presented a new style, swimming 100 metres and braking for first time the record of 1 minute ( he's actual time was 59 seconds). This new style was Front Crawl (or Freestyle Swimming)!
SPECIFIC HEAD POSITION
In freestyle swimming there is a harmonious switching between arms and legs. Head is looking directly down to the bottom of the pool or sea and breathing is done by turning your head right or left. The turning side it depends on the swimmer, but you may use both of sides, right and left.
BODY POSITION
Considering hydrodynamic forces, a horizontal position to your body gives us the lowest frontal resistance and at the same time allows our arms and legs to work in the water more efficient. Crawl is the fastest swimming style for many reasons. One of them is that crawl is the most used style in every swimming training.
When you're using crawl, half of your head should be outside of the water, shoulders on the surface, hips under the water and your legs inside the water shaking the surface with their movement. A really useful note is that you shouldn't throw too much water when you're using your feet. Legs movement should be controlled!
ARMS POSITION
For better understanding, we split arms movement to:
- Entrance
- Grubbing
- Pulling
- Boost
- Reset
The entry of your hand to the water should be right after the end of Rest which is done outside of the water.
Your hand is touching the water using your palm with a 45 degree angle. Grubbing the water starts right after the entry and the most beneficial phase of the whole movement, combined with Pulling the most important one! After all these, the movement is going like a carrousel, and it's doing cycles again and again. Using both your arms and legs you can swim in the best way possible. If you are a new swimmer be sure you're starting slowly with low rhythm so you can focus on movement! If you don't learn slow, you'll never go fast!!
