It's the third year in a row that the Half Distance nationals are organized at Eupen, but in 2019 the streak might be broken by Challenge Geraardsbergen. Skoda Challenge Geraardsbergen announced this morning to have opened up their application to host the 2019 nationals, meaning that De Muur might see its first ever triathlon title battle. 2015 was the last time a Half Distance championship took place in Flanders.
This year the Skoda Challenge Geraardsbergen takes place on June 10th, but it's not yet clear if they will stick to the date for 2019. It's the second edition under the Challenge flag, but the race has already become legendary due to the combination of De Muur and the Congoberg, as well as its stunning finish on the market square. It's an ideal setting and it offers the opportunity for Belgian top athletes to measure themselves with the Challenge toppers... In 2015 Charlene Ottewaere and Pieter Heemeryck were the last champions on Flemish soil, Pieter came second in last years edition of the Challenge Geraardsbergen and first Belgian. The competition is warned.
