RENO, Nev. ---- To celebrate Nevada Reading Week, Reno Bighorns players, coaches, dancers, front office staff and Bruno, the Bighorns mascot, will be visiting nine Washoe County Elementary schools to read to students in the first annual “Books with The Bighorns”.
The organization will begin double-day visits starting March 1 and conclude on March 7 at the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. The visits will last an hour long with 30-40 students per classroom.
The goal of “Books with The Bighorns” is to help Reno/Sparks youth build a lifelong love of reading as well as encourage adults to read and talk regularly with children.
In early October, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver joined the Bighorns and the Reno-Sparks Chamber of Commerce to help kickoff United Way and the NBA’s “Literacy is the Cure” campaign at the Boy & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. The Sacramento Kings and the Reno Bighorns together contributed $5,000 to help the efforts to boost the literacy rate in Nevada. This community appearance was just one of many the Reno Bighorns have planned for the year – with a goal of 250 appearances total.
Bighorns will be visiting the following schools and organization:
Maxwell Elementary
Elmcrest Elementary
Bailey Charter Elementary
Duncan Elementary
Lois Allen
Libby Booth
Donner Springs Elementary
Jesse Beck
Boys and Girls Club
