NORTH Bondi’s Ned Wieland this morning has become the youngest Aussie boy to swim the English Channel.
The 16-year-old, who had his birthday just a few days ago, completed the 33km crossing in nine hours and 45 minutes while his dad Mark was on the boat.
The Waverley College schoolboy wasn’t allowed to touch another human, boat or receive support from anyone — or his record would not be validated.
“Finished in 9:45 mins thanks everyone for the support along the way,” he posted on social media this morning.
The Channel Swimming Association said: “Ned Wieland has got the RECORD! At 16 years and 10 days old he is the youngest male Australian to cross the English Channel.
“He landed on the Cap in a time of 9hrs and 45mins (unratified).
“Ned was on board Louise Jane Charters with pilot James King and observers Andy King and Keith Oiller.
“Huge well done to Ned and all crew on board!”
Ned had been waiting since July 15 for better weather to swim the channel and it finally cleared last night (Australian time).
During his months training, he also fundraised nearly $30,000 for the RUOK charity.
