New York Giants – 2017-18 NFL Season Analysis

A Big Year for the G-Men

Everything is in line for the Giants heading into 2017. Ben McAdoo took the Giants to the playoffs after winning 11 games in his first season as head coach last year. The Giants defense allowed the second fewest points in the league with 284 total. The offense last season did not live up to its full potential, but it will be interesting to see if offensive-coordinator Mike Sullivan can turn it around in his second year on the job. The Giants made several roster moves over the offseason that could ultimately send them back to the playoffs in 2017:

2017 Draft Picks

Evan Engram – TE, Ole Miss – 1st Round

In the first round of the draft, the Giants brought in Evan Engram, a route-running tight-end that can catch just as good as he can block. With Odell Beckham, Brandon Marshall and Sterling Shepard running downfield, it’s going to be a wonder to see how opposing defenses will manage to cover Engram as well.

Dalvin Tomlinson – DT, Alabama – 2nd Round

A beast from Alabama, Dalvin Tomlinson is in the running to be a starting defensive tackle for the Giants. He will play a big part of the Giants run-stop. Currently he is battling it out on the depth chart with Jay Bromley.

Davis Webb – QB, California – 3rd Round

The Giants took Davis Webb in the 3rd round with the intentions that he will take the helm once Eli Manning calls it quits. He will have a lot to learn, but in the meantime, an apprenticeship behind Manning will be a valuable experience for the rookie.

Wayne Gallman – RB, Clemson – 4th Round

Wayne Gallman has tons of upside as an NFL running back. His speed and quickness can make him a secret weapon for the Giants in 2017. Paul Perkins will get the starting job, but if he can’t take control of the backfield, expect Gallman to earn some early down carries later in the season.

Over the past few years the Giants have landed some key players in their drafts that will play a big part in their success this season. Here is a look at some of their former picks:

2015 Draft Class

LT Ereck Flowers

The first round draft pick in 2015 could be a make-or-break component to the 2017 team after a brutal season last year.

S Landon Collins

Collins has been arguably one of the best safety's in the NFL and will continue to be a cornerstone of their defense.

2016 Draft Class

CB Eli Apple

Ohio State's Eli Apple was taken #10 overall in the 2016 draft and will be the Giants #1 CB on the left-side if Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie can't find a way to stay healthy.

WR Sterling Shepard

Shepard had an amazing rookie year as a replacement for Reuben Randle. He will head into his 2nd season looking to keep things going in the right direction alongside Beckham and Marshall.

RB Paul Perkins

With the departure of Rashad Jennings, Perkins finds himself with a starting job in his 2nd season in the NFL. Shane Vereen will play a complimentary role to Perkins on passing downs.

The Run Down

Overall, I think the Giants are poised for another great season. The run game will need to prove themselves, but with the Giant's dynamic receiving core, Eli Manning should have a field day picking apart opposing secondaries. Expect to see them back in the playoffs this year.
