Social Media

What is online reputation? Do you manage your online reputation? Do you know how people perceive you?

There is a serious amount of personal and business information shared every day and often without fully understanding the extent, perceptions or consequences of the information shared.

According to Reputation Defender

92% of people have said that discovering something negative about a contract through an online search would impact their perception (YouGov PLC)
82% trust the first page rankings from search engine results (YouGove PLC)
80% of employers/recruiters Google you before inviting you for an interview

Social media can be very daunting for some and for some it can be an easy way to share feelings as the only feedback you receive is in writing and not face to face. Managing you and your information is the best way to go.

Think of social media and online reputation as your fingerprint to society and in society. Should I be on social media? Do I have the capacity?

• What does the brand look like?
• Is it Male or Female?
• What colours would you associate with it?
• What name would you give it?
• Is it National or International?
• What profession does it practice?

No matter how “under the radar” or “low-tech” your lifestyle, there is a good quantity of information about you online—and people are seeing it.
If someone writes something negative about you online, it can put you at a serious disadvantage over the long term—especially if you’re not aware of it. You might never know why you didn’t get that apartment you wanted, or why a job offer never materialized after that phenomenal interview.
It’s important to keep tabs on what people are saying about you online and then take steps to correct any inaccuracies.

Negative comments and articles increase the chances of your business losing business two fold as the negative articles increase. You are a brand of your company.
Social Media platforms ultimately drive traffic to your website or your company’s website for that matter. How can you add to this? The how, why, what and when is important for you and your company.
• What is a trend or innovation in your industry that makes you excited, worried, or angry?
• What are the biggest challenges in your industry? This is the birth of the “How to…” blog post.
• What question do your clients ask you the most? What do you wish they knew before coming to you?
Saying all of this can be extremely daunting, but start slowly and when you are ready Be yourself, no one knows the information until you put It out there for everyone to see.

Very, very important, whatever you put out there you or information you share, you do not own it, it is not deleted easily and it is governed by its own laws, not yours

Two tips to remember:

  • Your reputation is what other people say about you when you leave the room….
  • Social media is more than just being social. Respect it!

Thank you and great to hear

I agree, the reputation is extremely important, something you can not buy, but should earn.🙂

And can lose so easily

So true!

This is the exact Bible Verse for Reputation; that I want to share :

Proverbs 22: 22 New International Version (NIV)
A good name is more desirable than great riches;
to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.

Thanks @sportspodium for reminding us, following you...

Thanks for your comment

Public availability of information is a blessing and a curse, especially as social media expands and becomes more popular. A viral post can make or break an unsuspecting user!

You are very right.

@sportspodium : Nice article... Totally agreed that social media is important at the present world, be it for individual or business... it's part and parcel of our online-presence.

This is very true

very nice article thanks for info

Great article, You are realy good at writing.

One thing we need to do is to think before acting.
Think before talking about somebody, think before doing something.
Everything that we do have it's own consequences.

Thank you for this post and hope this will wake up people and make their think before posting.

Thank you and very good comments

This is something that we have to tell the youth of today. I literally know so many people who have gotten fired from their jobs because of social media.

Reputation and Respect are the two things you have to earn, it is never something given easily nor freely.

Nice thought provoking article thanks.

Thank you very much

Insightful post. Reputation in social media is as important as in real life.

I agree, thanks.

Thanks for the information

It is our pleasure

One thing I'd point out though, I think social media is making everyone too introspective to the point you relate too much and categorized yourself into a group too easily.

E.g. Maybe you feel a little down. You see some pictures, quotes and articles on depression. You therefore jump to the conclusion you're depressed too when really, you are not.

One's own reputation in that sense, is at risk from our own selves.

Reputation is important.Internet don't foget nothing
Good Post

This is so true like you analogy.
@rogerblu

Well said! We sometimes forget to think twice before posting something. Thanks for reminding!

Cool article, you guys should watch Black Mirror, it's a dystopian miniseries. there's an insightful episode on how social media affects our lives :) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5497778/

There are so many things I posted on the internet as a teenager that make me wonder "What the hell was I thinking???".

Hey @sportspodium

First of all, I am really glad to see a branding and business post on Steemit which is getting lot of love from community.

I am a blogger, freelancer and social media manager that's why I know how important "Reputation Management" is.

Today one Tweet can ruin our business reputation that's why it's vital to provide online support to convert your unhappy clients into happy clients.

There are lot of bots who can solve this problems but no one can replace a human.
