Jose Fernandez was one of my favorite baseball players. He was an All-Star pitcher for the Miami Marlins, but Jose Fernandez will always be remembered for more than just baseball talent. Born and raised in Cuba, Fernandez tried multiple times to defect to America before he was successful. When he arrived, he brought a joy to the game of baseball that captivated the fans in Miami and around Major League Baseball. I drove 12 hours to take my son to watch him play against the New York Mets and I remember seeing him smile and joking with his teammates. Tragically, in 2016 Fernandez lost his life in a boating accident just a couple of weeks after I took this picture.
