Tour de France is coming, there come the doping accusations!
Today, a quite interesting article in one of the Flemish newspapers. Apparantly, a LEGAL supplement, called ketones is taken by half of the peleton, but nobody wants to admit it, because of the scare of the public opinion. And I don't blame them.
It is in the cycling world a public secret that Team SKY and the British Olympic Team already used ketones in and before 2012, heading up to the Olympics in London.
And the results for Team SKY and the British Olympic Team were, and that's an understatement, astonishing.
Now, when it has become cheaper, other athletes start to use it, too. But what is it?
Ketone Esters
Ketones are a by product of fat being burnt by our body... It has the specifications of a fuel for when every other fuel is lacking. It helps the body recuperate better, it saves muscle tissue of being used as a fuel. And it feeds the brain for the necessary nutrients. So, we all have it in us to produce ketones, but only when all sugars are already burnt, and fat is starting to get used as fuel.
A perfect solution by the body to help itself in need.
Now a professor has been able to synthetically create these ketones in a lab and has brought them to the market with his patent. Under the brand name HVMN these products are now taken daily by cyclists, triathletes, runners, etc... And according to studies, they do have a significant effect. In one study the effect on (non-athletes) people with ketones compared with the placebo was a performance enhanced by 15 % after 3 weeks of intensive work-out. They recuperated better, slept better, performed better, and ate better...
A miracle product and not doping, but why does nobody admit they are using it?
Sincerely,

I think the intuition behind Ketone drinks is completely fine for cyclists; pretty much all cyclists follow a high-carb, low-fat diet to maximise body glycogen stores, but the liver doesn't produce as much Ketones as if they were following a Ketogenic, high-fat, low-carb diet, and they use the drinks to promote the levels of these molecules. I wouldn't outright say it's natural but it definitely isn't a performance enhancing "drug" per say.
That being said, Ketone drinks are definitely widening the gap between WorldTour level teams and Continental level teams - I read somewhere that a litre of Ketone drink can cost you upwards of $1000. Just a dip in the ocean for Team INEOS or any of the other big cycling team, but for a low-budget continental team trying to get exposure it 's not a level playing field. For that reason I think they should be banned completely by the UCI.
True, but if you see how Corendon-Circus as a pro-continental team is beating Worldtour teams on big events, you would wonder what these big teams like Katoesja and CCC are doing with their millions... Or maybe it’s because of ketones? 😏

First time I heard about Ketone bro. In my eyes everything that improves one's performance should be banned from official sports competitions. Regards bro.
I get you there, but we have it physically in our body after hard exercise, so it is not distinguishable if one has taken it, or if it is just natural... and it seems that it is not dangerous, so I guess that's why it is on the safe list.
Fair points mate, but I still think is cheating. If we produce it naturally why do they need more dose? Yeah, to perform better. Regards mate!

I can't get anything that opposes your opinion... Still, how would you catch them? That's the issue, and if one uses it, the others need to do too, otherwise they have an unfair disadvantage... It's kind of a catch 22...
Yes bro I agree, it's kinda paradoxical. I guess they should check out the levels of Ketone prior to the race. Still legal though so let's wait and see what happens.
