Jorge Lorenzo is realistic with the world championship competition situation after winning the Austrian MotoGP. The runner-up finish was targeted by the Ducati rider at the end of the season.
At the Red Bull Ring Circuit on Sunday (12/08/2018), Lorenzo started from third to win the race. The Spaniard finished with a 0.130 advantage in front of Marc Marquez and 1.6 seconds from his own team mate Andrea Dovizioso.
In the process, Lorenzo and Marquez went into a tight fight. Both riders saluted each other until the last round, before finally Lorenzo could keep his position until the finish line.
This is Lorenzo's third win in 2018 after Mugello and Catalunya. However, this result is not enough to get closer to Marquez. Lorenzo is still 71 points behind while the championship leaves only eight draws.
However, the runner-up position is not impossible for Lorenzo. With a collection of 130 points, the former Yamaha rider was only 12 points behind Valentino Rossi in second place and has surpassed Dovizioso one point.
"It would be better if Marc finished far behind, it's hard to catch him," Lorenzo revealed in the GPOne. "We certainly can fight for second place, Valentino is near and Dovi is only one point away."
"We want to learn and have fun until the end, fight to get the podium and win. Without the pressure to fight for the title, the mentality is different."
"It's a pity we have ergonomic problems at the start of the season, and a couple of times. But I want to maximize the current situation and see where our final position is."
