John Stones will probably play in a new position this season. If Manchester City fail to get the midfielder they are looking for, Stones can be installed in that position.

The natural position of the Stones is a central defender. However, the 24-year-old player had played as a midfielder when his team beat Chelsea 2-0 in the Community Shield match on Sunday (05/08/2018). He left his post in the heart of the defense in the last 10 minutes after Vincent Kompany entered the field.

City manager, Pep Guardiola, considered Stones' appearance quite promising as a midfielder. Guardiola may also play it often in this position this season.

"John performed very well at the World Cup and returned to show his character," Guardiola said as quoted by FourFourTwo.

"I'm happy to see him in the last 10 or 15 minutes like a defensive midfielder. John might be able to play there," he said.

City are still trying hard to get a new defensive midfielder in the final days of the summer transfer market. The Citizens need a coating of Fernandinho who is now 33 years old.

City had previously approached Fred and Jorginho. However, the two players finally joined the rival City in the Premier League.

Making Stones as a midfielder is a reasonable choice considering that the player does have excellent bait accuracy. If the Stones change positions, City will also not lack a central defender because there are still Kompany, Nicolas Otamendi, and Aymeric Laporte.

"We'll see what will happen in the future. In the Premier League, there are lots of matches and every player will be involved," Guardiola said.
