Millitary rule is a rule by the members of the armed forces. The military has their power through coup d’ etat.The first country to experience military coup in Africa is Egypt in 1952,thirty years after their independence.The first country to experience military in West Africa is Togo in the year 1963.
The recent country to experience military was Burkina faso in 2013 when they impeached their president that had ruled them for 27 years.The first time Nigeria experienced military coup was in January 15,1966.
ACHIEVEMENTS OF MILITARY REGIME IN NIGERIA
- Creation of states during Murtala and Obsanjo regime
- Establishment of various development programmes and skills eg:Operation feed the Nation(OFN) by Obsanjo.
- Creation of structural adjustment programme(1985),Poverty alleviation programme in 1996
- Inculcation of displine into Nigerians by Buhari
- Establishments of war against indiscipline(WAI) in 1984
- Establishment of National youth service corps in 1973 by Yakubu Gowon.
- Change of Nigerian currency system from British pound sterlin to Naira and kobo in 1971 to 1972 by Yakubu Gowon.
- Change of Nigerian driving system from right to left.
- The federal road safety corps(FRSC)was established in 1988 under presidential Babangida to ensure of road users.
FAILURE OF MILITARY REGIME IN NIGERIA
- Dictatorship
- Rights of citizens are not respected in military regime.
- Citizens who commited one crime or the other are either sentenced to long term imprisonment or to death without trial in any constitutional court.
- The press(mass media) is controlled by the military government.
- The constitution of the country and all political parties are usually suspended whenever the military takes over power.
