Right from the time we are born, we are thrown into a world of uncertainty. Basically we grow up under the tutelage of our loving parents who have been equipped with the tools to cater for us and bring us up till we are off age. But no matter how well they cater for us there is always the uncertainty of the future lingering over our heads. This uncertainty is even more pronounced at an early age for children born into a family of irresponsible parents, abandoned shortly after birth or born into abject poverty in which the means of livelihood is unreliable or completely absent. At the initial stage our pathway can be easily predicted as it usually borders on education. However the uncertainty becomes quite glaring the older and more independent we become.

Questions begin to arise; what is my purpose on earth? What do I want to become? What indelible marks do I desire to leave behind?

No matter how often these questions arise, no matter how difficult it is to find answers to them, one simple truth stands out: you have to put a PLAN in place to fulfil your potential. You are not likely to get to that promised land unscathed without having properly planned your journey. The importance of planning cannot be overemphasized. As responsible adults we need to plan all the time. We can plan for little things as well as for bigger things. The uncertainty of the future should spur us to plan ahead in case of eventualities. Good parents should have a long term education plan for their children. A couple expecting a baby should have a laid out plan for the delivery and immediate post delivery care of the neonate. A graduate should have a plan in place for securing employment or starting up his own business. Even students should have a well laid out study plan for their forthcoming examinations.

In whatever sphere of life planning is a key component to prepare for the uncertainty of the future. A planless individual is like a floating balloon in the sky, wherever the wind blows that's the direction the balloon will follow. It doesn't matter if the balloon will head for a tree, or a rooftop, or a ditch. Many of the successful individuals in their chosen fields have gone that far due to strict and meticulous planning.

It is also worthy of note that when you set out a basic plan be disciplined enough to stick to it. There will be many distractions that may tempt you to sway away from the original adequate plan, but you have to be focused on the objective and keep your head in the game. Of course you could make a few modifications here and there regarding the plan but let the main objective remain clear and be sure your targets are realistic.

Planning may not be the only key to success but it definitely plays a significant role in providing a lift in the right direction. Remember that popular saying; 'If you fail to plan, you plan to fail'.
