WATER BORNE DISEASES
These are diseases that are diseases that are caused by drinking contaminated water. This diseases might also be spread by bathing these water and eating food exposed to this water.
EXAMPLES
Cholera caused by the microorganism vibro cholerae
Dysentery caused mostly be Shigella dysenteriae
Typhoid fever caused by Salmonella typhi
Hepatitis virus can sometimes manifest itself in water (and food) causing Acute hepatitis.
Poliomyelitis causeed by polioviris.
Amoebiasis caused by amoeba
etc.

MODE OF TRANSMISSION
Major of these diseases are transmitted through the faecal-oral route, the water had managed to come in contact with faecal manner somehow, this could be from contaminated hands after use of the toilet, Improper siting of borehole (i.e. close to septic tanks), defaecating in streams and rivers that also act as source of drinking water, Improper disposal of faeces etc.

COLIFORMS
Coliforms are gram - negative, rod, non - spore forming bacteria that can ferment lactose when incubated at 35C for 24 to 48 hours. Faecal coliform are used as indicators to test the quality of water, they are found in the intestinal tract of man, their presence in water indicates the water had come in contact with faecal matter. E.g. E.coli, Enterobacter faecalis.
MEANS OF PREVENTION
Proper personal hygiene should be maintained e.g. proper washing of hands with soap and clean water so you don't unknowingly contaminate food.
Boreholes and wells should be sited as far away as possible from septic tanks and soakaways.
Avoid defeacating in water sources that doubles as a source of drinking water.
Sterilize drinking water before drinking e.g. by boiling
Do no leave your food and drinking water exposed.
Don't dump refuse into water bodies

TREATMENT
In the case of any symptom visit the closest health centre as soon as possible as diseases are easier to treat in their early stages.
