It's Metcalfe's Law in action, although a different form of it. When your own personal social network are on Steemit, it adds so much more value to you personally because now there's no need to use the other social networks to communicate with your friends.
It will get even better if Busy.org catches on because you can send private encrypted chat with your Steem keys (private communication is seriously lacking on Steemit).
