Depending on the goals of the investors there are different strategies.
Daytraders are looking more for hypes, forks and actual news while the long term investors have to check the quality of the project. Is the project solving a actual problem? Does it already have a product or are they just talking like 99% of the shitcoins? Are they listed on the big exchanges and if not why? Is the team behind the project confirmed or even known? Are there other coins with the same goal?
As an investor you have to collect as much information and decide what you think is the best
That is a very difficult question to answer. The best solution I've come up with for myself is the 70/30 strategy I use. Maybe it can inspire you as well?

Not meaning to offer any financial advice but only that my own stratigy has been HODL since before the 2015 crash.
Swing trading is stressful and time consuming; plus there's a lot of risk. It's exciting when it works, however.
Anyway, I got burned by the December rise and January crash, so buy and HODL alone kinda sucks; I'm now thinking hold until another huge rise then selling a big chunk. Very simple, I just need to not let greed make me want to keep holding...
