Not sure if this an Evangelion or Star Driver. Maybe, Kill la Kill? No, its me...Darling in the FranXX!
- The First Impression
I do enjoyed the first episode even though it does feels like it same as Evangelion but with a different settings. The story is about a group of child are living in a place called as “birdcage”, destined to pilot a robots called FranXX to goes against their enemies. To be honest, this is like a standard mecha anime plot.
So, what makes it different? It’s not an Evangelion, it’s a FranXX. Each of the robot are piloted by two pilots with a different gender. Not everyone can just enter the robot and pilot it, you need to sync it with your partner too. Oh, it’s not located at the New Tokyo, it is called as Mistilteinn.
The story itself is not bad but the lack of the originality makes it no different with the other mecha anime out there. There is no unique selling point in this show.
Since this is the first episode, the characters exposure are not being push on this point. So I can’t comment on the other characters on the show, yet. However, let’s talk about the main character.
This guy is Hiro. Hiro is a boy who thought to be a prodigy but later on he keeps fallen behind makes him deemed as no longer unnecessary for them. This makes him a sad and depressed character *cough Shinji Ikari. Suddenly, there is bad thing happen and he became the hero of the show. Oh cliché.
However I feel attracted to the Code 002 girl. She comes off as a very strong character and looks cool throughout the episode. Also, she also has a interesting upcoming backstory too so I do have high expectation on her.
Oh, i forgot to mentioned that is this show, the robot has a human face.
The visual is outstanding as expected from the studio Trigger. Bright, colorful and lively. It deserved a praise for its art and visual. It’s Trigger after all. Sparkling and stars everywhere.
The music on this show is great. The opening song is catchy and gives the glimpse of how this show would be like with Code 002 or Zero Two. The sound effect on the scene fight are good too. I looking forward for more score from the show.
Hey, check this opening song "KISS OF DEATH" by Mika Nakashima x Hyde, its a good song!
- The overall
Even though it does feels like it’s a copy of Evangelion, I still enjoyed the show with its gorgeous visuals and score. The story can be improved and its only 1 over 24 episodes left, there are so much to come! I think I’ll keep watching and hope that it will get improved on each of the episode. I mean, it’s a collaboration of two big studio, Trigger and A1 pictures. What Could Possibly Go Wrong?
Anyway remember when there is new season coming, the 3-episode rule must be applied! Thank you for coming and see you on the next post!

hi nice friend of your article. i give vote
Thanks :)
I'm not sure how you go from saying that it's unoriginal and an Evaclone and then give the story an 8, despite being riddled with conveniences and sloppy writing.
Still enjoyed it though
The first thing I thought of was Eureka. LOL
Right? I also had flashbacks from Evangelion / Eureka... Boy needs to syncronize with girl, to unlock epic robot. Meh.
Havign said that? The girly is spunky, and seems like she'll be an interesting character to observe, sooo... I'll give it a few more episodes.
