RE: ๐Ÿ’ Answering Common Questions about Voting and Curation ๐Ÿ’ก

in #steem-help โ€ข 8 years ago (edited)

I have three questions. Hope you don't mind, I'm a newbie and kinda lost.
So, here goes:
I understand you have 30 minutes to upvote but is there a limit to the number of upvotes per 24 hours? I heard somewhere there is a limit of 20.
Also, I heard there is a limit on the number of stories I can post, four in 24 hours. Is that true as well?
Last question, If I re-steem a post, that means I have re-shared it, so how does the payout work? Is there a limit on how many re-steeems I can do per day as well?
so much thanks, I hope you reply, I haven't had much successs finding definitive answers to these.
Hugs and stuff.

Yep, definitely no problem I'm here to help.

I understand you have 30 minutes to upvote but is there a limit to the number of upvotes per 24 hours? I heard somewhere there is a limit of 20.

Well, technically the 30 minutes I'd mentioned was just how the penalty worked over the first 30 minutes of a post existing, so you can still vote at any time. While there isn't a hard limit to voting (since you can cast millions of votes in a day if you wanted), this would drain down your vote power percentage effecting how much 'money' you give the author and what you could earn from curation. The closest 'limit' is how many 100% (since we can split votes) votes you can cast over 24 hours while letting your vote power percentage regeneration keep up. Right now this rate allows for 40-100% votes in 24 hours. (This is proposed to change to 10 a day in the next hardfork, but with more powerful votes.)

So as an example, you hope onto Steemit today with a voting power of 100%. If you cast 40 full votes, it will bring your voting power down to 80% (meaning approximately 0.5% reduction per vote you cast.) After waiting a day without any voting, you'll find your voting power is back at 100% again.

But if you instead cast 80 full votes in 24 hours, it would reduce your voting power down from 100% to 60%. Then after a day of casting no votes, your vote power would only be back up to 80%.

So the limit doesn't actually stop you from voting, but rather how much you can vote without going over what can be regenerated. (Right now my own vote power % is lower than I prefer, so I've been voting a little less and mostly been giving half votes to people today so I can get it back up.)

Also, I heard there is a limit on the number of stories I can post, four in 24 hours. Is that true as well?

This used to be true, only being able to make 4 posts over 24 hours without incurring a penalty. But now this is no longer the case. Post all you want...there is no limit or penalty anymore.

Last question, If I re-steem a post, that means I have re-shared it, so how does the payout work? Is there a limit on how many re-steeems I can do per day as well?

Correct, if you re-steem a post, it shares it to your blog and passed into the feeds of your followers. There is no change in the payout...everything earned on that post still goes towards that author (75%) and that posts curators (25%.) Resteeming essentially doesn't earn you anything.

There is no limit to how many re-steems you can do. However, the more you resteem, the harder it is for people coming to your blog to find your posts. To many can also annoy some followers by 'spamming' their feeds. Personally, I try to resteem 2-3 posts a day...but that's just my preference.

Happy to answer these! Please let me know if there is anything I might clarify on this. And always feel free to ask any questions...I'm here to help.

Brilliant. I love the answers. Thank you so much, really very much appreciated.

Absolutely! Happy to help out. Feel free to ask questions whenever :)

Super cool. I tried to change the ''power" of my upvote but on IOS, there is no slider. Is this a known problem or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks a bunch. I did click on the arrow but nothin' doin.
J.

You're not doing anything wrong. Right now it's actually now there. The slider bar gets unlocked once you have at least 482.432 Steem Power. Once you get build up a little bit more, you'll see it pop up.

Btw, love that bird photo post of yours from a few day ago!

Smiling. Thanks. If you want to, you can use the photo as much as you like, royalty free on me. Print or publish. No sweat.
I really appreciate your help.
J.

Thank you! I appreciate that! :D

I'm happy to help...love doing it. :)

Oh, I have another question. Thanks for being cool about helping out.
So, I went on an upvoting spree and upvoted too many things. Hey I'm enthusiastic. Lol. I checked steemdollar.com and discovered my votes are worth $0.00. What can I do to fix that? Should I change the tiny steam dollars I earned into Steem power? Or should I just wait a couple days. I'm not just a minnow, I'm a baby minnow. Grinning.
Thanks.

I've found that prediction on steemdollar.com to be off at times, just in case you even notice a discrepancy. But to answer your question...

The short answer is that if you want to be able to give more when you upvote (like going from zero to a penny,) then you will need to have more Steem Power. If that's something you're wanting, then changing your Steem Dollars into Steem and then Powering that Steem up into Steem Power would help towards that. However it can take a while to be able to regularly give a penny with your vote.

How much you give on an upvote depends on multiple factors that include how much Steem Power you hold, what your voting power percentage is at, the current share price of Steem, how much payout is already on the post and how many votes (technically vote weight) have been cast are the more major ones.

Just to give you an idea...right now I'm a little over 7000 Steem Power and give probably about 12-13 cents to a post with zero, when I'm at 100% vote power. I do think getting your Steem Dollars move around into Steem Power will move towards your goal...I just didn't want you to be discouraged if you didn't see it give a penny right away.

I'm a baby minnow. Grinning.

Hehe, I've been there and know exactly where you're coming from. I hope to see you grow bigger on here!

As always right answer at the right time. What I gather is: I can earn crypts by upvotes and by posting stories. I'm going to have to do both because minnow voting is good for reputation but not real earning until you have significant steem.
So far so good?
If I am a good original content creator and I iget attention from power users/whales/dolphins and that will significantly add to my take. The focus though is long term build of equity in the system, via posting and upvoting.
How am I doing?
As always, thanks for being awesome

I think you've got it! Build up the account by getting votes on your posts and comments (unless you want to actually pay for Steem to put in there.)

Earning from curation will come as you get bigger. I only earn about 8-10 SP a week myself (though I don't actually try to maximize this, just vote when I want on what I want.)

As a motivator...I started my account with nothing. While I'm not the biggest person on here...everything I have is from posting. I've not paid for anything here.

You can definitely get there!
