SUPPLEMENTATION
Taking iron, calcium, and vitamin supplementation is good but your doctor best recommends them. It is important to note that supplements cannot compensate for bad eating habits. A well balanced diet is the ultimate.

SMOKING, ALCOHOL AND DRUGS
A pregnant woman should avoid tobacco and alcohol as they have adverse effects on the fetus. Drugs should be taken with caution. Only drugs prescribed by a doctor should be taken. (The doctor must be made aware of any pregnancy, right from the onset.)

DEALING WITH MORNING SICKNESS
Close to 50% of woman experience nausea during the first three months of pregnancy. This usually resolves by the end of the third month and for must woman it is not severe enough to compromise nutrition. Some however vomit frequently and still in a small percentage, the vomiting is so severe as to require medical attention. Modification of diet must be tried first and it is only when this fails to give relief should the use of medications be considered.

Foods that are tolerated vary from person to person and each individual must observe this and adjust her diet accordingly. Generally, however the following are helpful:

  • Small frequent meals,
  • Dry foods,
  • Minimal fat and spices and
  • Drinking liquids in-between meals instead of during the meal.

The nausea is worse at different times of the day for different people. Note should be made and the main meals eaten at the good times If these measures do not help, then there is the need to see a doctor for further management.

CONCLUSION
The importance of good nutrition during pregnancy cannot be over-emphasized. The development of an individual from infancy through adulthood is largely affected by his development as a fetus. The best girl a mother can give her children is to ensure excellent fetal development by feeding well.
