Why @steemmonsters might just be the best thing on the blockchain...
by @revisesociology | Aug 20, 2018
steemmonsters.com is one of the most successful DApps to have been developed on the steem blockchain: the project has already raised over $200K since its launch back in June. Currently undergoing rapid development under the guidance of @yabapmatt and @aggroed, there’s here’s a massive buzz around and a whole lot of love for @steemmonsters, and games haven’t even begun yet!
What is steemmonsters?
Just in case you’re not familiar with @Steemmonsters, @aggroed describes the venture as a ‘collectible trading card game with RPG elements’ (@steemmonsters first ever post. The game itself has features in common with magic the gathering and hearthstone.
You can purchase packs of cards from the website steemmonsters.com – you’ll need to buy an initial pack of 15 cards, and it then costs $2 for one pack of five cards. You can make your purchase in SBD, steem, fiat, or a whole range of other crypto currencies.
There are two basic types of card you can get in your packs – summoners and monsters (the former summon the later), and each falls under one element – either fire, water, air, life, death or dragon. Cards also have a rarity level… common, rare, epic or legendary, and there are also ‘gold cards’.
In terms of tournaments (which are due to start in September) @aggroed says
… the basic mechanic works as follows: you'll get summoners and monsters. Summoners will summon monsters. Monsters will fight using four key stats of attack, defense, speed, and health.
Those who place high up in the Tournaments will, of course, be rewarded with steem etc.
@steem-monsters: why it’s probably the best thing on the blockchain…
The great thing about this innovation is that it not only demonstrates the advantages of decentralised blockchain based gaming compared to corporate controlled gamining, it is also a great advert for steem compared to other blockchains: the developers – chose steem (rather than Ethereum for example) because it is simply the most functional blockchain for their project.
For starters, unlike with Hearthstone, each user owns their own trading cards, stored on the blockchain. These cards can be traded with other users (there’s already a market, which can be accessed via the website).
Gaming is massive, so this project is potentially a good way of on-boarding new users. And let’s be honest, steem currently needs all the help it can get to stop its current steady decline!
The project is a great advert for steem because the zero transaction fees means cards can be bought and traded without the fees which are always associated with transactions on the Ethereum network. Obviously, the speed of steem also helps here.
Finally, there’s something of a virtuous circle that’s been created: people are currently being paid to develop art work and back stories for the playing cards. Others are also getting massive upvotes for simply opening their card packs live. So @steemmonsters has provided other people opportunities to make steem.
