SBDs
Steem has been doing well and growing. It's not quite as fast or as sexy in it's growth as some of the other coins just yet, but it's growing and moving. Then the Koreans put Steem and SBD on one of their smaller exchanges. Then they started pumping SBD. I think the logic goes something like there's only 3.6M of them. They don't grow that quickly. They are free to use and useful because transactions confirm in 3 seconds, and ultimately they look pretty cheap. They started stocking up! We had up to $15 SBDs. BTC tanked a little and we're back down to $7-8 SBDS, but either way when you get your post rewards it's a ton of money.
A post pays out roughly 0.4 of the value of what's shown on Steemit.com in SBDS. Then you multiply that by $8. So, a hundred dollar post on steemit will pay 40 SBDS and you multiply that by 8 and your post is worth $320!!! That's a ton of money for something that you likely spent 1 hour writing (there's usually a project or expertise behind that too). It's a great return! It helped push our activity way up!!! We just broke the record of active number of users at 44k and it's going up even more. Thanks @penguinpablo for keeping great stats on this!
Alexa: 690 USA
Alexa is a ranking system of activity of internet pages. As you can see we're now in the top 700 most active websites in America and in the top 2000 of the entire world. Personally I think this is tied to high SBDs, and hope they stay high and continue to get higher (especially as the price of btc rises).
This platform is a little over a year and half. The number of businesses that are in the top 2000 that are that young I'm guessing is pretty few. Most of those have been established for 10 years or more. The fact that we're there is evidence we're doing great. Lots of haters out there think its not enough, or Steem's a piece of shit cause it isn't in the top five yet, but I don't think those people have reasonable expectations. When I started Steem was at $20 cents and 50k accounts overall. It's a year later and we're 15x more valuable, we're in the top 700 websites, and we grew the number of accounts by about 10x while asking people to pay between $2 and $20 bucks to start an account here.
Steem's doing great. Try to be reasonable!
Velocity and Youtube Adpocolypse
So, Steem tracks the number of software updates as "hardforks." We're on hardfork 19. We're working on hardfork 20, and it should happen soon. I'm guessing in January. What it does is give the Steem community a fast way to make new accounts that doesn't require 6 steem. It's changing it so that new accounts are minable and they will have limited ability to act on the blockchain without 6 steem. That means we can start having lots of people join this community and it shouldn't take days or weeks to get new people into the system.
Combine that with the YouTube adpocolypse and I start seeing dollar signs. YouTube is now blocking payments to certain YouTube channel operators. You can argue the reason why they are doing it (censorship vs corporate sponsers), but the effect is the same. People that used to count on money from YouTube aren't getting it anymore and they are looking for a place to earn money with their content. I believe this a great home for them because they can post novel content here and get rewarded for it, and then archive it on youtube 7 days later and get longer term revenue from that too (assuming they haven't been dropped).
One thing that's stopping some folks from doing this is just how hard it is for the sign up process to work, and that's frustrating for their audience they are trying to bring over. The pitch of come here and let's grow together doesn't work well if they have a hard time getting here!
Communities
Steemit is working on another big change to build communal accounts into condenser.Condenser is the program that powers steemit.com to interact with the Steem blockchain. The Minnow Support Project has been doing this successfully for a while now, but we've had to build tools from scratch off the block and off of condenser to allow it. But we've already seen how a community account can help a social group blow up to 6,500 members in just a few short months. We started from scratch with no followers or money. Imagine when established groups have the ability to do this. It's going to bring whole networks, non-profits, schools, etc onto the platform.
SMTs

We all see so much growth potential here, and this is just the beginning!
Imagine being able to blog, social media, watch videos, fundraise, crowdraise, shop, etc. all from one platform where the content creators/users actually get rewarded!
Now that I think about it, Steem is so much more than just a blogging and social media platform. The possibilities are endless! One just needs to have a decent imagination and some knowhow/skills to build and grow your very own successful blockchain business on the Steemit blockchain.

What factors will make steemit “steem” ahead while other social media crypto currencies on various block chains are producing returns of over 100,000% such as Reddcoin @senseicat
Steemit is on a path of sustainable exponential growth, its metrics and success will be better gauged by looking at how well steems userbase grows and how profitable it is to use as a platform, which will increase the price steadily. Do you know if any reddcoin projects yet, are they able to sustain the volume of transactions steem does? For Steem a big jump will come after they release the smart media tokens which will open the door for people to create their own apps on the steem blockchain with relative ease.
I'm seeing a lot of well known Youtubers with large followings join Steemit and evangelize it on youtube. Very exciting.
I think that's going to make a big difference. Steemit right now has a bit of an insular tendency, which has been really great to build a community, but to have articles and posts reach the point where they are regularly showing up in Google searches, and having youtubers point to Steemit or post on Dtube is going to explode the platform.
They have no choice than to make such smart move now..

Wow! This is more than encouraging! A lot of my Steemit friends are now posting daily and I'm glad about the renewed enthusiasm. SBD price may also fluctuate but there are reasons for it to go up further with people getting in because of the rewards and staying (adding value to the platform) after realizing that this is a great community. Yes, I believe it should be. This is because more activities will be carried out with Steem on other platforms which would make its price increase. Just as the Increased activities on other cryptocurrencies increase their price. SMT is all about spreading the horizons of Steem to other platforms.
I have brought five facebook friends so far on Steemit. They are @tonnyoxa @andi87 @hivergent @eriondoko and @datatreemap If each one of us could bring five facebook friends and make them publish some good content by starting with "IntroduceYourself" post would be great. The same reasoning is valid for Quora. I like to answer questions on Quora and I'm trying to talk about Steemit there too. I heard about Steemit on Quora so I guess that might be a great place to make some advertisement.
I totally agree with you. Steem is one of the few cryptos with a genuine use case and a very passionate community behind it. A community that stuck by it even when steem and sbd prices were not too good. I am a bit guilty of being inactive as well but I am back and ready to have an incredible 2018 with steemit.

I have been on Steemit for a little more than 2 months, and I am continuously amazed by its potential, and not only on the financial level!
Based on your 5 points, I would rank them SMTs as first , then communities followed by the Youtube adpocolypse.
The SBD rise, wow! I just entered before, and after 2 month gaining as high as 3-400 US$ worth of Steem for a good scientific post (about 6 hours work) is quite amazing.
I don’t understand clearly the rise of SBDs, neither do the main bosses (I watched the discord reunion with Steemit masterminds earlier this December). So I wouldn’t bet too much on it.
As for Alexa, yes, there is a rise, but this is not only due to the number of users, but also to the amount of use for each user (which can be very high on Steemit). Additionally, it only takes into account users with the Alexa toolbar, so the recent slight rise is statistically difficult to interpret.
What I see being the main driver behind the 2018 boost is Steemit as a social media platform. The friends I dragged on it, and sometimes by the toes, are now completely hooked, like me. And the addiction is not solely to the crypto gain, but to the amazing friendships they are building up here! Many are fed up with Facebook, and I can sense masses of Facebook users that will be fleeing to new horizons. And when they realize they can make money at the same time, well… human nature plays in our favor (for once ;-) )
3 months ago, I never has heard of Steemit. Since I joined, I converted 3 people that are becoming heavy users. One of theme, a techy, has even set up a node, downloaded the blockchain, and we are now reflecting together on new applications, probably oriented towards an improved research tool (very much needed on Steemit!).
2018 will definitely be a big year for Steemit and the Steem blockchain! And I am so glad I stumbled upon it a few months ago!

That's a low estimate. $50 by April/May, will close out the year way higher. Maybe several thousand times higher.
You have to look at utility. SBD links to the most usable and proven Blockchain on the internet. Once SMT's come in, Steem and Steemit will dominate the comments section of tens of thousands of smaller websites run by content creators who want a way to engage, reward and share with their own communities directly.
The future of next year's internet for Content Creators is all in the SMT White and BluePapers. SMT's are two years ahead of everyone else's thinking, just like Steemit is currently two years ahead of any other alternative Blockchain social media in actual day to day use and practice.
Once people understand that by following a Content Creator they like and engaging with them that they will earn money, just for commenting on that Content Creator's website, then there could literally be tens of thousands of New Communities springing up around SMT's. And all of that leads back to Steemit's pre-eminence across all of the web.
SMT's are a literally game changer. Verge's Wraith Protocol is great and will be the game changer this month, then next year the game changer for most of the year will be SMT's and will also be in the online games sectors which currencies like Mana, 1st Blood and Voxels are showing us right now. If SMT's take off like in terms of day to day use on tens of thousands of websites then $50 will seem conservative.
Bitcoin rose by 700% in 2017, Litecoin rose by $2,960% in 2017, Verge rose by 800% in one week last week (sure it fell back once the Bankers started waging their war but it's come charging back today). So when SMT's are implemented and people finally have them in their hands and start creating all the places on the Web that SMTs will allow them to create, then what do you think might happen?
Could it be possible we see SBDs become a universal web-currency across tens of thousands of websites? At which point would a growth of 5,000 or 6,000 percent seem conservative?
There are a number of blogs currently speculating that Ebay is about to accept Crypto as payment and that Amazon will possibly implement it too as early as February 2018. On Wordpress there are lots of plugins being developed to allow Crypto payments in multiple currencies and there are services like https://www.coinpayments.net/ doing the same. TenX and Monaco are starting to roll out Visa style "Bitcoin" Cards. 50 Plus of the worlds biggest Banks from Asia, The US, Japan and Europe have all gotten together to create a super-fund to stake Ripple including putting hundreds of Billions of Dollars into Ripple's escrow and putting hundreds of billions of Dollars into the 2017 End of Year Crypto market to try and dominate the space by creating massive Bear Market walls to block the progress of rising currencies like Verge and Next.

)So already this month the worlds Banks are pumping every spare bit of Fiat they have into the Crypto space. That means all the money in the world is moving into the Crypto space and away from Fiat Systems. If all that money flows in, right now the Banker's will use it to fund their Crypto war against every other Alt coin and when that fails and that money gets wrestled off them by the Alt Coin traders piece by piece then that money will still be in the system.
@aggroed is spot on, but he's being too conservative. When SMT's release, they will be releasing into the 2018 market, not into the market we currently understand from this year. That is into a Crypto market with substantially more money in it that was in it in 2017. And when ordinary Creators and their fans realise they can start making really good money online with SMT's without having to download a whole blockchain or be a programmer or run a proof of stake node by keeping their wallet open, then the value of SMT's and their core currency (SBD) will rocket. You have to look at utility. When the average man or woman starts using it day to day and living off it, then it could end up being way more valuable than even Bitcoin, because it no longer becomes just about Bitcoin being a store of wealth, it becomes about SBD's and SMT's being a way for people to make and earn wealth in the first place.

The median payout, unfortunately, is $.01, 10,000 times less than $100. The median is the payout the largest percentage of people actually receive. I think that is a better metric for measuring Steemit's success.

I have been on steemit for about a month and the only way my posts have been getting worth: Bid bots....
I hate it.... But, when i finally get a following for my posts. The bots can stop and my friends will be the ones to reward me for my content.
New saying "give a man some steem, he will power up a small bit. Teach a man to properly steemit, he will power up to spread the wealth" yeah needs work....
But, if we can welcome new members like family (giving votes, comments to help and what not) they will bring their family and friends to make this platform even better. In the end causing everything to get higher in price and even more people interested in SMT's.

I think the fact that Alexa rank is gaining positively shows that Steemit is growing, I have made only a small investment to Steemit till now. I will powerup after getting my paycheck if possible.

Thanks aggroed. Again upvoting and resteeming your post. Yes, 2018 will be a major event in human history. Currency and transaction systems are going to click over from FIAT to Crypto-FIAT (Ripple, etc.) from one day to the next. What is your take on a GFC?
