The Northern Region is one of the ten regions of Ghana. It is located in the north of the country and is the largest of the ten regions, covering an area of 70,384 square kilometres or 31 percent of Ghana's area . The Northern Region is divided into 26 districts. The region's capital is Tamale.
In a society where the overwhelming majority of residence ride on bicycles, one might still come across a few who manage to ride on motorbikes.
The same could be said of the inhabitants of our little community. A handful of them, while not fulfilling the criteria to be described as well to do in a place like , Tamale, the regional capital, were sufficiently well off to be able to put some money aside albeit not considerable amounts which they lent to other inhabitants who approached them for help
The nearest available bank was at Nkawkaw ,which ,as I mentioned earlier, was several kilometres away. Hardly anyone in the village made use of their services. One might know where such 'well to do's' of the community kept surplus money . Several wild rumours made their rounds concerning the matter. Some spoke of some individuals digging holes near landmark objects on their farms and concealing their money, wrapped tightly in plastic bags to prevent the elements from destroying them
Some of the wild went on to say that death took some of those individuals by surprise, leaving them now time to notify their relatives about their hidden wealth. Others were said to have managed, just at the very last seconds of their struggle with the inevitable outcome of their mortality , to pass their secret on to family members
Usually the need to borrow money arose when someone fell seriously ill and needed to be taken to hospital. Initially, extended family of the person thus affected pooled their resources. Sometimes, a the resources of fathers, mothers, uncles nieces etc were pooled together and yet remained insufficient. In such a situation, they consulted residents of the settlement regarded as being well to do for help
There were instance , though, when no one in the settlement could help.
