SMT the next big thing or an internal hype??

in #steem6 years ago

There is this question I have been struggling with for a while and in the beginning the answer was clear but now I have been wondering a bit lately. I do want to make abundantly clear that I really love Steem and have been powering up all I could since I joined almost a year ago.

Will SMT's be everything we hope for ?

Why do I ask this question?

well, Steem has now roughly 60k accounts and most are just normal users that are called plankton or minnow. Only the top 1 or 2 % have more then 500 sp. This means that the investment in the blockchain is quite limited.
Now on Steem we talk a lot about SMT and debate how good it will be. There are a lot of moons and lambos going around in the posts and comments but does anyone in the "outside world" actually know about the Smart Media Tokens?

Because if no one knows they exist or will exist then how will this attract investors and how will this generate the price boost that is so often expected with SMT's coming out.

All the projects like @dtube, dlive, @steemhunt, @buildteam, @actifit, @utopian-io @appics and some well know steemians that support or write about them a lot like @exyle or @flauwy and even @ned those are really great but are we not just shouting to eachother?

Should we not be spreading the word outside of the steem community

There are some that really do and try to get more investment (either time or money) inflow on Steem
I have just seen a project like @oracle-d from @starkerz and @anarcotech or one of the first big examples to go out and promote in the real world like @sndbox.

But are these going to be enough?

I personally try and promote Steem on the weekly meetup we host with @cryptoworldzug here in the Crypto Valley but these always seem like trying to put out a forest fire by throwing a glas of water in the woods.

Are you promoting Steem to the outside world or are you just taking out as much as you can get while it lasts and do not count on SMTs boosting the Steem value?

Is anyone else having these thoughts or is this just me?

We only need one site with a million active users to fire up their own token and it'll grow like wildfire.
I'm more worried that we take it slow enough to catch any problems while we're small, and not earn a reputation for FOMO over function.

good point as well, had not thought about that. It needs to function right and hopefully we can catch any problems before they grow to big

I think we just have to trust the invisible hand of the market to allocate value to the most useful crypto projects over time. The key is time, all this stuff is geometric by nature so it compounds slowly and almost imperceptibly at first and then explodes. Not sure where we are on the ‘hockey stick’ curve but could be a couple more years before this thing really takes off. Dont know. As Tom Petty said.. ‘the waiting is the hardest part!’

that is so true, but during the waiting I will still be powering up. The more we all get the more chance it will be life changing money.
my point is also that we need a bit more adoption and outside publicity, just shouting moon to one another isnt really going to change anything

Scam riding on overpublicised hype

over-publicised where?? that is my question, its very big on steem but no where else

Well said! It's good to inform steemit people, but we have to inform non steemit people as well!

yes, spread the word, and that will make the whole community stronger

@felander
I hope it's not only a hype.

that is also my hope, only time will tell

My only concern is the lack of transparency in SMT development by STINC , no official timeline announced as far as I know !!

nope, they said the want to do it right and as such will release when ready :-)

an official timeline might force them to either postpone or release buggy software

yeah...that's not how it works anywhere else

Having timelines keeps them honest and expectations managed, it's like when you don't have a defined goal you can never fail

I really hope SMTs will be huge.

Crytocurrencies are the future…
Steemit is a great platform
