It's tough, I know it's not going to be a popular thing to say but it really is just about working on making good content and interacting with the community. I noticed I was getting more followers when I chatted with people and I suspect that was because that helped them know then I wasn't some bot or scam profile, plus of course people seem to like it when you interact with them generally rather than just sit on your profile spamming away.
