Daily Motivation
You may be thinking that exercise, healthy eating and getting enough rest are the only means by which one can expand a lifespan. While this maybe true, purposeful living, social integration and developing close relationships may prove to add years onto your life.
Three Things You Can Do to Live Longer
More In-Person Interaction
Our human connections have profound impact on our mental, emotional, spiritual and even physical health and well-being. This means that we ought to prioritize having a support system that promotes intimacy. However, simply interacting with people by making eye contact, saying hello, shaking a hand or even giving a hug can relieve stress. These interactions can play vital role in lowering cortisone levels and releasing dopamine that can improve overall mood. Ultimately we must find ways to feel as though we belong in community with others.
Live Detached from Cell Phones
Too much screen time can have a negative impact on our daily lives. Excess amounts of time spent on social networks, dating apps and even online news sites can deplete our happiness considerably. Technology has taken away from our ability to call it quits or find an end to our pleasurable interactions much like when we watch a movie, read a book or attend a music concert. Most things we do for pleasure have an end, however scrolling on the phone can prove to be endless slowly eliminating our desire to detach ourselves. To remedy this, it may be beneficial to interact with those around you and setting parameters for when cellphone use is acceptable.
Find Purpose Instead of Seeking Happiness
A constant evaluation of our own happiness can actually contribute to feelings of hopelessness and depression. Riddled with inconsistency, happiness is a fickle emotion and can be determined by a moment or an experience. Essentially feelings of sadness can be more closely linked to a lack of purpose than a lack of happiness. This can be characterized by an existential crisis or having trouble justifying our own existence. However, developing a passion or finding a way to be motivated and drive ourselves forward can prove to be a crucial resolution. Also finding an initiative or being apart of something that is bigger than ourselves, a greater community, something akin to a sports team or even a church congregation can also help. And most importantly possessing the autonomy to share our story that illustrates a personal narrative, can also inspire us to find our purpose.
