I remember you had briefly touched on it in one of your previous blog posts. As a newbie, reading that felt like stumbling on gold.
In the past days that I have been on Steemit, I think I have earned more from comments and upvotes on other people's posts than on what I earned from making posts on my blog.
And like you said, ability to earn quality returns from comments depends on the commenter's reputation, the reputation of the Steemian who made the original post, who sees and upvotes the comments, time, and a couple of other factors.
For newbies like me, it certainly makes more sense to comment than struggle to make new blog posts.
I will try this technique more.
