How Reputation Is Attained on Steem/Steemit

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

I'm seeing some misunderstanding when people talk about how they think reputation works. I have only been back 2 weeks, so maybe things have changed that I am not aware of. But as far as I know, it still works this way.

The Misunderstanding

The misunderstanding is about how reputation is earned. People seem to think you only gain reputation if the person voting on you has higher reputation than you.

STEEM POWER is What Matters, Not a Higher Reputation

Attaining reputation is not dependent on the person being a higher reputation than you. Getting more reputation only requires STEEM POWER being used to vote on your posts or comments**. Someone can have a lower reputation than you, and still you will gain reputation points. How do I know? Because I have seen it work through analyzing posts I made in the past.

Whales used to vote more liberally. When I would get a vote from a whale who had lower rep than me, my reputation points would go up a lot because they were voting on me with a their STEEM POWER at a high enough voting power. If they voted with less power, I would get less reputation points.

I gained a lot of reputation (as others have) because of the amount of SP that was being used to vote on my posts or comments. Now that whales hardly vote (at least not on my posts :P) my reputation goes up slowly, bit by bit.

Delegated STEEM POWER

If I get voted on by someone who has a lot of delegated STEEM POWER, and at a high enough voting power is applied, then my reputation points go up quicker compared to lower SP accounts voting for me.

Attaining reputation is based in STEEM POWER, not in someone having a higher rep than you :)

Getting voted on with STEEM POWER will make your post rewards and your reputation score go up in value.

Downvotes / Flags to Lower Reputation

The misunderstanding likely comes from how flagging/downvotes work. In the downvote, it's based in STEEM POWER as well as reputation scores. If someone has a lower reputation than you and flags you, you only get your post reward value removed by the weight of their vote, but not your reputation.

But if someone has a higher reputation than you and they flag you, you will get reputation points removed from your account, in addition to the post reward value removed from your post. This is where the misunderstanding comes from as I see it.

I hope that help clear up the misunderstanding about thinking a higher reputation account is required for more your reputation to go up when they vote. All that is needed is STEEM POWER.

STEEM POWER runs/"powers" everything on the platform ;)

Reputation is only a real measure of getting voted on with STEEM POWER, despite how we may like to think otherwise...

Thank you for your time and attention. Peace.

You did clear something up for me, thank you. I understood the downvoting, but not the upvoting completely. I didn't realize that the amount of SP applied to the upvote determined how much it helped your reputation. I thought only for the reward amount, and that reputation went up the same amount for every upvote, regardless of from whom or how much.

Thanks for this.

Glad to help clear things up :)

Actually, if you would, might you help me understand one other thing also? I see amounts under my posts, but they don't seem to correspond to STEEM or USD. I see them go up and down without the number of votes changing. How do I interpret that dollar amount for each post's upvotes?

If you don't have time to be answering newbie questions, understood. But this has really been puzzling me and it seems you would definitely know. Thanks if you can.

That is a pending payout amount in USD. The price of STEEM in the market, the amount of votes, and the SP they have and the vot epower and weight the apply, all affect how much value is.

Hey @indigoocean, I noticed this question as I was responding to this post.

There's a great website that has been set up called steem.supply that helps translate the dollar amount you see on your post to an actual payout in terms of USD or STEEM.

The dollar value on each post is referred to as an "STU" on steem.supply, just so that isn't confusing. Just head to your post, grab the dollar amount you see there, and plug it in at the top of the calculator to see an idea of what your actual rewards will be!

Rep means nothing if it only takes one whale in a bad mood to put you in the negitive for subjective reasons.

I couldn't agree more

:D

Lol, this video is not available in my country

oh, it was just bad reputation by jhona jett.
:D

I'm here for a several days by now and my reputation doesn't even move slightly! So I guess I need to figure out how to make friends with some steem power rich individuals :)

Post, and interact on comments... I dunno... it used to be different in the past... :/

Hey @krnel! I found your blog from your appearance in PYPT today. I enjoyed this post because there aren't many posts out there about how reputation actually works. This is very helpful information.

I'm working on a project to help explain such concepts to new or prospective users. This insight will be helpful when explaining reputation, so thank you for sharing it.

I wish you the best on your return to the platform. I'll definitely check out your witness effort, as I'm always looking to support quality witnesses.

Great, glad to know it was helpful info for you as well :) Good luck on your project, gave it an upvote too ;)

I really appreciate it! It was good to hear from you today on PYPT. I'll look forward to seeing what you share now that you've decided to test the Steemit waters once again. Do you have any recent blogs about your witness efforts? I suppose I could look, but I'd love to know about any updates.

As a Witness, what I offer is not technical improvements or apps for the blockchain, but informative quality knowledge. I want people to learn about meaningful information that can affect the quality of their lives, to change the current condition of the world through empowering information.

I want to change things in the world, and Steem is the platform through which I wanted to try to do that by spreading quality information. Quality information will raise the quality of our consciousness, our thinking, and as a result the overall quality of the world as well. Moral knowledge is the most important to do this.

Hmm I always thought it was based on number of votes, but I see now it is the number of votes + amount of SP +voing powa . Thanks for clearin this up yo!

Seeing my rep go up is always a satisfying feeling!

Useful information... Now I know why your reputation is 76...hehe
thank you @krnel

wow...wonderful post @krnel i like your post. thanks for sharing good post.

Excellent work dear friend @krnel congratulations for addressing this issue that for many is very confusing.
I wish you a great day

Whale?

Is this a pirate ship?

Vegas?

I thought this place was about currency exchange, if it's merely about worthless money what's the valid reason for existence?

worthless money

What worthless money? STEEM? It has value...

Wow nice thenks information @krnel

@krnel Thanks for the heads up. I'm a newbie and this was just in time.

@krnel thanks for the analysis...however what about those who earn rwputation merely by using bid bots. The more they use bid bots theor reputation goes up...i have seen many user whobis posting single picture and use bid bots to reach higher reputation then watever they get they uae to power up.

Everybody should know this, it's too important for us..

Well Explained!
Yes it's steem power that matters.
