Blockstack coming after Steem

in #steem7 years ago

Steemians,

I wanted to share an article that caught my eye earlier today. It was posted on May 10, 2018. Surprisingly, I have not seen anything about this on Steemit. I am hereby breaking the news, albeit 12 days later.

The short story: "the Blockstack Public Benefit Corporation is taking a stand and committing $1,000,000 to support social network dapps that rewrite the fundamental basis of how we connect."

The whole thing:

What are we thinking ? A future/viable alternative to the upcoming apps powered by SMTs? Healthy competition?

Thanks for your feedback and comments.

About Blockstack

Blockstack is the new decentralized internet.

With Blockstack, users control their data and apps run on their devices. There are no middlemen, no passwords, no massive data silos to breach, and no services tracking us around the internet.

The applications on blockstack are server-less and decentralized. Developers start by building a single-page application in Javascript, Then, instead of plugging the frontend into a centralized API, they plug into an API run by the user. Developers install a library called blockstack.js and don't have to worry about running servers, maintaining databases, or building out user management systems.

Personal user APIs ship with the Blockstack app and handle everything from identity and authentication to data storage. Applications can request permissions from users and then gain read and write access to user resources.

Data storage is simple and reliable and uses existing cloud infrastructure. Users connect with their Dropbox, Google Drive, S3, etc... and data is synced from their local device up to their cloud.

Identity is user-controlled and utilizes the blockchain for secure management of keys, devices and usernames. When users login with apps, they are anonymous by default and use an app-specific key, but their full identity can be revealed and proven at any time. Keys are for signing and encryption and can be changed as devices need to be added or removed.

Under the hood, Blockstack provides a decentralized domain name system (DNS), decentralized public key distribution system, and registry for apps and user identities.

Thank you @liotap. This is both interesting and concerning and speaks to Steemit's need as you noted re the need for quality content as well as other user friendly features, both which brings on board more users.

This will be an immense rivalry for steem going ahead, steemit needs to restrategize to keep its energy , I additionally Forseen a solid rivalry originating from the EOS blockchain

Agreed, there will be some competition coming once EOS is up. I just feel that it may take a while for any other network to get to scale. Steem has a few months to get more quality content producers on-board!
A key component to consider from a user standpoint, is the cost of switching from one platform to another.

@dtube2 and @liotap. Strongly agree.

Another thing you pointed out in previous posts is that you should hedge yourself by owning both Steem and EOS.

What are we thinking ? A future/viable alternative to the upcoming apps powered by SMTs? Healthy competition?

I Agree! Healthy competition! Steemit needs it! I personally don’t like monopoly. If the competition gets much better I switch. Everyone will as well. No hard feelings. As of now, steemit platform is the best out there and has to work pretty hard to stay that way.

I just heard about blockstack,
Is this the same as STEEM ..
I will try to read it further.
Thanks for sharing @liotap

I Concur! Sound rivalry! Steemit needs it! I for one don't care for imposing business model. On the off chance that the opposition shows signs of improvement I switch. Everybody will also. No hard emotions.

Sir @liotap,

Thanks for the info. The system upgrade is really so amazing. These types of steps are heping us so much. Have a good day sir. Waiting for the ESO growth sir.

Blockstack will definitely enables better privacy and security and will empower users.

Wow this is great info thanks and great work👌👍👏😂

For now steemit that ranks best, we do not know in the future, whether blockstack will compete with steemit ..
I think this is good, healthy competition to show who is better ..

This will be a huge competition for steem going forward, steemit has to restrategize to keep its momentum , I also Forseen a healthy competition coming from the EOS blockchain . There will be alot of crypto social networks coming up, some will utilize and integrate the Eos graphene technology

very nice post @liotap, this is a new science for me, I have never heard from before about Blockstack, but in my opinion, STEEM will remain the best for the future, because STEEM has many supporters and he is best for currently. If there is a new competitor, the possibility to compete with STEEM is very little, because STEEM is already known by all countries in the world. Thanks for sharing...

This is great one @liotap. Have you heard about Oracle-d? Would like you to check the model out.
