I think I read somewhere that steem team is not focusing on steemit because it is more of an experiment. That makes me wonder, how much should i get involved and is there a point in building a following here

There is some truth to this. The goal is for more front ends to develop on the Steem blockchain. This doesn't mean you shouldn't build a following here. Your following is not Steemit-specific. It will remain in place no matter how many new interfaces come along. Steemit is just one way to access the Steem blockchain. It could vanish tomorrow and your account, wallet, followers, posts, and everything else would remain intact, and accessible through sites like Busy.
Thats a really good point.
Yes that is why he said in his reply to me (he links it up top).... As far as how far to get involved, that is something that is a terrific question and something that each person should decide. Basically I feel like I've made a lot of friends here and I want to see them succeed. So while I'm not happy with the experiment issue, I will stick around and try to improve things to help it succeed to the extent that I can.
I recently started using busy.org instead of steemit and its much better feel. It feels like a social network side rather than a content selling site. Even $ amounts are in light gray color and not highlighted. It has a like and a unlike button and a notification which only talks about when your content is reblogged and commented on instead of when its up-voted.
