The sheep that we know today is the result of the dometication of humans whose history is derived from three types of wild sheep, the Mouflon (Ovis musimon) originating from Southern Europe and Asia Minor, Argali (Ovis amon) originating from Southeast Asia, Urial (Ovis vignei) from Asia.
In Indonesia, sheep breeding centers are located in Aceh and North Sumatra. In Aceh in 1993 there were about 106,000 sheep, while in North Sumatra about 95,000 sheep were farmed. The land used for livestock in Aceh based on the data of Soil Researcher and Agro-climate of Deptan in 1979, covering 5.5 million hectares ranging from class I to VIII capability, while in North Sumatra the area of land used is about 7 million hectares.
Sheep like goats, buffalo and cattle, belong to the Bovidae family. We know some of the sheep that are scattered throughout the world, such as:
- Sheep Kampung is a sheep originating from Indonesia
- Priangan sheep originated from Indonesia and there are many in West Java.
- Fat Tail Sheep is a sheep originating from eastern Indonesia such as Madura, Sulawesi and Lombok.
- Garut sheep is the sheep of the triangle crossing between the village sheep, merino and fat tailed sheep from South Africa.
In Indonesia, especially in Java, there are 2 well-known lambs, namely fat-headed sheep that are found in Central Java and East Java and thin-tailed sheep are widely found in West Java
Lamb is a source of protein and animal fats. Although not yet in the community, sheep's milk is a nutritious drink. Another benefit of raising sheep is that the fur can be used as a textile industry.
LOCATION REQUIREMENTS
Locations for sheep farming should be located in large areas, fresh air and quiet surroundings, close to livestock feed sources, water sources, away from residential areas and water sources (at least 10 meters), relatively close to the marketing and feed centers livestock.
