I think at this point Steemit is still an experiment. As such, it is probably a good idea to try and push the boundaries of monetization models with it.
With the advent of blockchain technologies we have the opportunity to start monetizing content on the internet in a different way than advertising, such as the attention economy of this site, or resource sharing blockchain projects like Oyster, for example. This shift will probably take a long time, and right now, Steemit cannot compete with the legacy platforms, so it might be favorable to meet halfway and put adverts on it in addition to the existing monetization model.
Nevertheless, I still say that we shouldn't, just to see this experiment play out and to see whether this platform can be competitive with the legacy models when it matures.
