My overall thoughts, when I first saw Steemit about a year ago I legit thought it was just some Cryptocurrency enthusiast forum and said "Nah". Really does need more diverse content and I do try myself to provide that content. Doesn't help with most content on the front page for unregistered viewers being primarily crypto related.
Then again I almost gave up too waiting for my account to be approved, got a couple friends on here that also almost gave up waiting. I had to encourage them over Twitter to just be more patient. In my case I was ready to give up just 1 minute before I got a notification saying "here's yo details".
