I hope that Steem is the long term success you predict (or just as I, hope) it will be. For me, Steem is something I stumbled upon. My involvement is not a conscious decision after comparing and researching other blockchains. In the spur of the moment I got involved rather deeply in Palnet. And at the moment that is a huge success. Yet it is only three to four weeks old. There is no way telling what Palnet will be one, two, five or twenty years from now. Steem Engine is a fantastic and exciting development. SMT's will perhaps become a reality as well. And a wealth of developments like Palnet will happen, I think. Each with it's own target audience and each with it's own success rate. I agree with you that the Google like developments of the future are happening now or the ways are being cut for them to happen. What those will be is impossible to tell.
Is Steem going to turn out (with hindsight) the opportunity of a life time? I don't know. I do know I'm in it because I enjoy it now. I enjoy contributing and creating content for this blockchain. If it turns out to be a world changing success, that's all the better because then I have been part of it. If it doesn't, I still have a stimulating creative time now.
To me participating in the Steem world is not an opportunity of a life time somewhere in the distant future. It is life changing now.
