Why Steemit is the New "Gateway Drug" of Cryptocurrencies

in #steem8 years ago (edited)

In 2013, I was pounding the pavement in Vancouver in my ongoing quest to introduce bitcoin to new users. It was nothing if not an uphill battle. The hundreds of altcoins that followed didn't do much to help either. If anything, they just added to the confusion.

What we needed was a gateway drug - something that was both irresistible and super easy to start using. We needed a killer app to lure people in and get them hooked once and for all... Three years later, I do believe we have it.

This is my post-launch review of Steemit, intended for sharing on other social media platforms. Because I'm holding a comfortable amount of steem and steem power now, I don't even care too much about upvotes. I really just want this baby to grow and thrive out there in the world so if you only do one thing with this, please just share the ever-loving shit out of it.

@piedpiper Good video, man! Keep posting!

Thanks! I certainly shall :)

lol wow

nicely done, mate. :-)

thanks :)

Very good point man.. Steemit is the first really "cool" thing to get everyone interested in crypto and being able to earn it easily :D

Yup. Come for the vibrant publishing platform, stay for the pay.

vibrant-ish. we're long way from starting to pump up good content constantly, i think. I hope to see for example someone publishing a book started in steemit posts. maybe evenme :D but hope...it's there

It's coming! My partner arrives on August 12th and then the real magic begins. https://steemit.com/filmmaking/@piedpiper/crowdsourced-filmmaking-on-steemit

I think the creativity is just getting unleashed. The floodgates have been opened! The content will improve quickly, I think. The author here is right, Steemit is a phenomenal way to introduce and retain new users to cryptocurrency.

seriously u can earn thousands of dollars from voting the top posts

"Gateway drug" is the perfect term... because every millennial can do very basic web design. No reason to churn out free content when you can get paid.

damn straight! I wish this existed when i was a kid.

good balance @piedpiper. I too (just as @nineyards did) got into Steem and Steemit because of you. I also got into DASH because of Amanda's videos. I think that the future will be owned by the DAOs that understand how to incentivize participants and adoption.

That's great! Dash is a cool concept too but for the record, I don't have any. I'm keeping an eye on them though. Who knows, I might get into it at some point yet but it has to develop a fair bit more to draw me away from here.

What a bright future we have ahead of us. :D

I came here two weeks ago because you mentioned STEEMIT when you were interviewing Amanda. I have 60 dollars in my pocket all because of you. Bless you, piedpiper!

ha! Now that's what I like to hear. Welcome to the madness, nineyards! :)

You still need to convert Steem into bitcoin to actually spend it until online merchants support it.

We already accept it for real estate at Fort Galt. ;)

when i heard of Bitcoins i thought 'YAY i am going to make some money' but reality strikes...it was very hard to mine. Now Steemit is here and i think it can help earn average users like me.

Exactly, I stopped mining bitcoin two years ago. This model is so much more accessible by comparison.

I agree. The entry barria is much lower

Steemit isn't a replacement for bitcoin. Bitcoin is money with predictable rules. It's not about the technology, it's about the money. Steemit is not about the technology, it's about the excellent social networking platform it provides and it will replace bullshit like reddit and facebook.

Steemit isn't the potential replacement, steem is. The former is the application while the latter is the currency.

because of the drastic inflation, steem seems not meant to be a store of value, so i doubt it is competing with bitcoin

Bitcoin's not a good store of value. It's phenomenal as a medium of exchange though (except for the slowness of confirmations).

Great video Gabriel! Thanks! This makes me think about everything we imagined for Scribe.

Hey, thanks! Great to see you here :) Be sure to write an introduction piece using the tag "introduceyourself" so the people here can get to know you. Also, I'll be traveling up to Vina in a few weeks. I'm not sure if you're there but if so, I'd love to sit you down for an interview about Scribe and your entrepreneurship journey.

I will not be in Chile but we can have a chat anytime. For sure I have a lot to say about this journey!

Awesome. I'll get in touch so we can set it up!

If you only post you only loose time and finger sleep.

Yup. It's nice to wake up with more than you went to sleep with.

Glad to see more peeps from BC on here, I've been sharing Btc in Campbell river for 3+ years as a delivery driver and never have I had such a powerful tool to share it with... so there is about 15-20 new peeps hearing about steemit from me in my town. It's amazing to see people's eyes light up when I explain it to them

Right on! I've never been to Campbell River but I know a guy that moved there and the pictures he sends me look fantastic. Glad to hear that people have been receptive to bitcoin over there.

yes it's beyond beautiful here, Well for my first 3 years of trying to spread the "gospel" of bitcoin it has been tuff and I get that... I mean I'm a 36 year old delivery driver so I don't blame people for not taking me serious although there has been a couple people over the years that have said thanks for sharing it with them the next time they get food delivered. this last week I bet 90+% of the people's eyes have been lighting up with the concept of finally getting a piece of the billions of dollars that they help sites like facebook earn... #steemit is going to be huge lol the moment steembook happens is the moment that facebook falls flat on it's face. Cheers to you for participating ;)

Nice video man! Very clear explanation of STEEM. I've recently caught on and giving it a try as well. I'm planning on making regular posts daily. It's pretty cool, since people can use it relatively simply.

Thanks! Yeah, the trick is to just jump in and fumble around for a while. The money you accumulate will motivate you to learn all about the system under the interface.

Simplicity is the name of the game. Like many other fellow users of Steemit I think that this may be the killer App that will get a lot of people involved in crypto. Great post man!

Thanks :)
