I think STEEMIT can become more addictive than Facebook. Here's why.

Facebook exploits us. It hoards our data, it exploits our conversations, it even jumps into the little cracks between our private conversations. Notice that advertisement pop up RIGHT after you've checked out the same thing on Amazon. Yeah. I get that too.

And to add insult to injury it asks us to pay them to reach more of our fans. If we have pages of course. I have several. Facebook tells me, "If you want to reach more of your fans then just pay us a whack load of dollar and we'll go laughing all the way to the bank"

And what does that mean for us?

Diminished news feed. We can't see any of those posts from the pages we like anymore, unless we specifically ask for it. And then that's a competition in itself. Ever wondered why your friend has been quiet for ages? They haven't. It's just hidden from your news feed.

I may be old-school. But I want to be shown what I want - and I don't want a pre-determined algorithm to tell me what I should be watching.

And what do we get in return?

Nothing.

Pay, pay, pay.

Oh wait, we get a nice platform to talk to our friends. OK, there is that. And free games. Yup, there is that too. So maybe not all that bad.

But here we have STEEMIT. Are you just as addicted as me? Do you know what productive things I've done over on Facebook, WordPress and others since then? None. Why? Because I feel rewarded for my participation. I may have only made just shy of $1.00 for my last post - but that matters not, because my voice still gets heard and it's again, more than the exploitation and big fat zero I earned elsewhere.

Hell I have to pay to reach my fans elsewhere now.

This is why this is so different in my opinion.

Rewards for creating worthwhile content? Doesn't that just scream encouragement to pick up a book and read it? Or read an interesting article?

Yeah. Me too.

And I'm fucking addicted.

It's nearly 2am here and all I want to do is create new and engaging content. I love it - and the discussion. The discussion rules. More discussion please!!

Bye bye Facebook, you're a has been :)

I do not entirely agree with this post. I mean it's great that STEEM is doing so well, but let's face it -- this is an entirely NEW social platform. I think saying that we are going to replace facebook, reddit, and the likes is doing a disservice to what this platform is meant to be. Steem simply cannot provide all of the features of facebook because of the way it is built, and that isn't a bad thing! Let's not be a new facebook, let's simply be STEEM!

Good points. I see what you're saying - but wouldn't it be great if STEEM forced other social media platforms to stop hoarding the money they make?

Oh of course it would, I think the current business models of these larger companies are at the core of the problem that has never had a solution until now. I mean, how else does a company offer a free service that requires thousands of employees, millions of servers, and the cost that goes along with it if not for advertising? If facebook came out with a blockchain technology and pushed it out, nobody would trust it at this point anyway. @dan and @ned along with the other developers and early adopters stand to make and have made a lot of money already off this platform because they had the foresight to see the flaw in facebook.

I am excited to see where this project goes, but it doesn't make me want to completely "leave" facebook. I cannot directly talk with, chat with, and easily see what my close friends and family members are up to on here. (yet?)

Awesome reply. I stand with you on this one :)

As tempting as it may be to say that this is the new facebook and it's definitely going to replace both facebook and reddit, you have to realize, that even though people are getting paid and as promising as the platform is, there is still a long way to go and a lot of hurdles must be crossed before this thing becomes a major competitor. We're still in the early days. Those other sites are not going anywhere for a while.

Oh totally - we could crash and burn in the next few days - but that's the excitement of it all, no? :)

The mixing of social media with the profit potential is probably one of the most addictive cocktails in human history

Oh I so agree. It's potent isn't it? What the hell am I still doing awake? I need to go lol

I completely agree. I kept checking my phone furing the hack for it to come back up. Very addictive.

Scary that this is only a Beta version :)

Steemit is the next facebook! I used to be a facebook junky until I came across steemit. Why on earth would I write on a wall constantly everyday and not get paid for it. Thank you steemit. You rock.

Agreeeed! So agree! Look, you earned 1c so far - if I had 1c for every comment I made on Facebook I'd be rich right now!! And that's the whole point. Loving it :)

there is nothing preventing anyone from cloning steemit and run their own version of it on the blockchain, Facebook, twitter and youtube might rather just set up their own service like that

I'd like to see them try. I'm loyal to here, anyway :)
