I did, so I created a small site where I can get some visibility in to who is following me, stopped following me and who is ignoring my posts.
I thought other people might find it useful, so I have made it publicly available, head on over to https://steem.makerwannabe.com and check it out!
The How
First, head on over to https://steem.makerwannabe.com
When you land you will be shown data for a random user, to see the data on your followers, type your Steem username in the text box next to Username. In the image you can see it has steemitblog in.
Next choose the period you want to see the data for, from the drop down.
There are four choices, 1 month, 2 months, 3 months and all time.
Finally click the search button and off you go!
You should get a graph, as well as a table with all the activity for the period you chose, each user has a link to their Steemit profile, as well as a link to see their follower data as well.
I hope you find it useful!
If I get enough of a response I am going to register a domain for it, make it legit!
The Why
I am no social media guru, only giving the number of followers on my account a cursory glance, until one day I noticed the number had dropped.
That made me ask, 'who stopped following me?'.
I tried digging into my followers on the Steemit interface, but so pretty quickly that it did not show historical data. 'No biggie' I thought and carried on...
But a seed had been planted, if, when someone follows you, it is recorded on the blockchain, then surely you can look back through the transaction and accumulate the data, finding out who stopped following you in the process?
Turns out you can!
The What
So the data is available on the blockchain, but I am very green when it comes to that, so I chose a different path.
In a previous post, I wrote about how to access blockchain data using the STEEMSQL service kindly created and hosted by @arcange.
I can work my way around SQL, so I spent a bit of time figuring out how the follow data was stored in the database.
For performance reasons (and to be a good citizen), I extracted the data I needed and stored it on my own server.
Next I wrote a quick PHP script, to crunch the data and spit it out in a way it can be used in a graph.
The graph took me some time, but thats another story for another post!
Conclusion
This is far from being a polished site, it has a few warts.
I am also want to add more functionality, firstly I want to add a trendline so that you can see how your followers have accumulated over time.
Next would probably be to filter the table, so that you can see more easily who followed, unfollowed or ignored you.
For now I am happy its (semi) done.
What do you think? Please leave a comment.
What functionality would you like to see?
What can be added to really add value for you?
Would you recommend this to a friend? Why? Why not?
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my post!
2 months later and I found the answer to my question! Thanks this is really awesome!
Awesome, that's great to hear it helped!
Very impressive man. Thank you
Much obliged! Thanks for the compliment.
resteemed!
I don't seem to have the option of resteeming this? Post is too old?
Yeah, think once it's past the 7 day window, you can't resteem anymore.
Appreciate the sentiment though!
But this kind of posts are a good habit to place a link in a new post and renew them with a little info there?
That means with quotes from your post. Because there are things that can't be said better than the one who made it :-)
I always wanted to do that but i stopped myself from doing that because didn't know if it is ok. Don't want to be just a reposting blog, but to share good info i see. There will always be new people here that will not see such posts at some point.
Thanks.
Hello, thank you. Its very useful.
Every new follower gets an 0.10$ upvote on his latest post. But please make sure that you are interested in my content.
Great service you have rendered to the steemit community and you will not go unrewarded. Congratulations.
Thank you for the compliment.
I hope that you get good use out of it!
Awesome, it's a good tool. I'd love if insted of a month, it can give a daily or weekly data. I want to check who followed / unfollowed me every day. Is it possible to get a notification of the same?
I am hatching a plan for an update to the design, so you may get to see it by day / week etc.
As for notifications, right now there won't be any, but this is definitely something I want to build in, in a future version.
Thanks for dropping by and taking the time to leave a comment!
Thanks for your reply. I came to know that esteem mobile app has a feature of giving an alert notification for every follow. I currently use Steem notification bot Noteefi on Telegram (https://t.me/noteefi_bot). It gives all notifications like comment, mention, new blog posts, subscription to tags etc. But I couldn't figure out any way to notify me for follow. Otherwise it works fine.
But when I want to anaylse in detail, your tool comes in handy.
Thank you for such a nice idea!
Just found this from someone else's post! So cool... I've never played the follow unfollow game and it's pretty neat to see who does. Following you!!
It is interesting is it not?
When I first joined it was not much of an issue, but with the recent influx of users I see many people following others without vetting them.
Followed you back, you can verify with a neat little tool I know of ;)
Very interesting. I was looking for information like this. Thanks. Sadly, I'm almost 2+ months late to upvote.
No worries, from your other comment, you can boost your SP using @minnowboost pay a bit of steem and get a major SP boost for a week.
I am boosting mine now, if you vote often you should be able to make your money back in the week. Just don't flag too often 😉
Great tool. I just found this today and i can say it is a very useful tool . It solved a question I have been having for a long time.
Found it in steemreports... very useful, thank you :-)
THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS!
My pleasure! It's a fun project, glad you like it.
😀
I was going to resteem it, but it doesn't have a resteem button, can people not reblog older posts?
No you can't, but I do have a follow up post, https://steemit.com/steem/@shaunmza/visualising-follower-data-see-who-you-need-to-follow
Thanks for dropping by!
Thanks, resteemed and up voted the newer post! Keep up the good work, I'm sure it will help a lot of us :)
Wow, this is totally useful, too bad I cannot resteem it, but hey, I could just post the link to this post and give you the credit and state why I think it to be useful. It's worth a try anyhow! Thank you @shaunmza!
I was looking for something like this. Thanks for sharing!
Interesting. I'm sure this will be causing some people some anxiety as they try to grasp the reasons why people have unfollowed them. :-)
If you look at the date of the unfollow, and anything you posted or commented on the same day, it might be easy enough to figure out. ie: What did you say that caused it?
OR
If it was a long time since you posted anything, and you were unfollowed that could be your answer as well. ie: How long did you say nothing which caused it?
Either way, its interesting, especially when you can see the same user follow you, and unfollow you multiple times. I love this tool. GREAT JOB
Yes, if you know who stopped following you, you can at least try and predict 'why'
Sometimes people simply follow other people hoping they will follow back, then stop following you if you dont. But thats just my opinion.
Glad you like it!
I am hoping that giving the links to the users profile you could take a look and see if you can figure it out.
Knowing who stopped following you is better to me, than just seeing your number of followers go down and knowing nothing.
Thanks for the comment!
Interesting app; bookmarked it to check out occasionally.
Thanks so much, I hope you find it worth your time!
I knew steem was not private if you used your real life identity but this is just...awesome!
How do the ignores work?
What exactly is being ignored?
Is it when somebody sees your profile but does not follow you?
If that is the case, I am going to follow you right now!
The ignores will bring about just as much anxiety as the unfollows.
Ignores are when someone 'mutes' your account. When you view someones account, at the top right there is a Mute button.
This basically means that they will not see your posts.
I clicked yours now, so you will see the effect, wait a few minutes while everything synch's up.
Followed you back, btw ;)
Following unmutes the account. Essentially your account can be in 3 states from another users perspective.
Hope that does not make it confusing :D
Let me see if I get it.
When I go to a new account I can either follow or mute.
When I follow and then mute, I automatically unfollow.
If I mute an account, does that mean I wont see posts created by the account either on:
Why not call them mutes and not ignores?
I believe this will make it easier to understand right away.
Yes, I think you are right on all counts.
The blockchain stores it as 'ignore', so I went with that, but I agree with you, mute would be more understandable.
I updated the naming now, thanks for the feedback!
I tried muting an account but I could still see their post on my feed that somebody I follow had resteemed. I had upvoted the post: would that affect the muting?
I believe consistency is important: either they change steem or they change steemit. Thoughts?
I am not 100% sure how muting works actually, thats a question for the steemit chat I think.
Often times whats stored in a database is different to what is displayed to the end user. I think it it is ok that the two differ.
Good stuff. Resteemed.
@shayne
Much appreciated, I am working on a follow-up post, then will hopefully have an update ready in the next few days!
Wow this is really nice of you, an invention i love inventions.
Its resteemed, its upvoted and you are followed.
How did you create the Upvote resteem and follow?
I want one, please send the link.
Kindly follow back
Thanks!
That banner, I can't remember, someone gave it away on a post a while back, I will need to find it for you, but you can use it too!
Hey, how do i use it? copy and paste or?
Will paste the code here, or you can just save the file, the drag it into your next post, then add the link.
Please do so, i will appreciate.
[![Follow me!](http://i.imgur.com/mkSVYs4.gif)](/@brianadams)
You should be able to just copy and paste that. Let me know if you have any difficulties.
thanks
Great tool. I would definitely register a domain for it! Thanks for sharing 🙂
Maybe I will, not sure what to call it just yet though!
Thanks for dropping by ☺
This is great! I want to some statistical analysis of my Steemit history to look for trends. It's hard to distinguish luck from skill
With a bit of dev you can do that for sure, so many people have put work in to make it easier.
What sort of analysis would you do?
I was thinking of doing a pretty simple 80/20 analysis to see which of my posts have gotten the most views. I know the long way to do it by hand, would be nifty to automate
Number of views is a Steemit thing, so may not be all that accurate. Also that value is not stored on the block chain so your only choice is to scrape your posts on Steemit.
Dang. OK, thanks for the insight.
This is a great post, thank you. Upvoted and following.
Outstanding. Very cool. Upvoted, resteemed, followed!
Thanks so much, followed you back!
goshhhhh, i wish i could even understand how to start doing this kind of thing. I will try not too get too crazy about my 59 followers but i can see this tool to be really important for future companies\advertising joining steem in the future...
I also do not have too many people following me, when compared to some of the popular people here on Steemit, so if I have the issue of not knowing who left, then imagine the person who has hundreds of followers!
Maybe soon you will rise in popularity ;)
Thanks for the comment, I want to do a more technical post of the steps I took, maybe that will convince you that , with a bit of work, this would be within your reach.
Everything I did was actually very basic!
great stuff, new follower!
Here is the link to the new post, https://steemit.com/steemdev/@shaunmza/steemit-followers-data-extraction-part-1 let me know if it helps!
Excellent post! I like your work My friend
Thank you ;)
Beautiful, @shaunmza. Big upvote! :)
Awesome, thanks!
Please shout if you think of anything I can add to make it more useful.
If I may observe a little problem. For example: on my username graphic says 5 unfollows on March 29th, and there is only one. It seems that one unfollow is enough to get whole column red, which is deceitful… Can you mend it?
@lighteye, take a look now, fixed the query which was squashing it all together, had a look now and it looks ok.
Thanks again for letting me know about the issue!
Much better. Resteemed
Sure thing, I battled a bit to get the graph working so its likely that it is still not 100%
I will take a look soon and let you know when it is fixed.
The site does not seem to be updating. :( Maybe it's my end, not sure.
Thanks for letting me know. It was definitely my side.
I made a change a while back and the import script has not been running since.
It's running now, but has to catch up two days worth of follow, that's A LOT of follows lately.
Thanks again for bringing it to my attention!
Great job @shaunmza . I was in need of it so much!!
Awesome, I JUST posted a follow up, with info on how I get the data, see it at
https://steemit.com/steemdev/@shaunmza/steemit-followers-data-extraction-part-1
I see I have got quite a lot of mutes in the beginning lol :p
That's cool. I see I've been muted a couple of times, but I'm sure there will be some who don't like some things I say. Doesn't bother me as I've made a lot of friends here
It might also have been a slip up, I noticed I was muted, then unfollowed/unmuted? then followed.
My query does not aggregate the actions over the day, say that might be the case for you.
At least now you have some visibility!
Well done man, thats the joy of steemit is clever people like you creating tools for others to use! Toperoo!
Thanks for the compliment, I hope to add more information soon!
It's great that you show the ignores, as I don't know any other way to view those.
Thanks
My pleasure!
I was only looking for follow/unfollow data, the ignores were a welcome surprise!
Thank you. It is good for community. I've resteemed it. And I've bookmarked the site for my Chrome.
Thanks! I appreciate the resteem, and that you left a comment here.
This is so useful to the steem community. Thanks for making it.
What a great idea!
Thank you!

It is very useful and it took me only 2 minutes to check that everything with my family on steemit is ok!
I am looking forward to your post of the making of, as I also had some ideas to get some information and fit them on a page. Resteemed!
Here is the link hot off the press!
https://steemit.com/steemdev/@shaunmza/steemit-followers-data-extraction-part-1
Wow, that is amazing, all in it, have to check it in a free hour. Thank you!
Thanks!
Let me know if anything looks out of place!
Great job to help others.
I really do hope that people find it useful, thanks for the comment!
Well done @shaunmza. But I can't Resteem it! How come?
Thanks!
As for the resteeming I really have no idea, can you resteem other posts?
Finally i found it. Thanks for this useful tool.
I think service is down...
yeah, its down for 2 days.
that's too bad.
@shaunmza where you at? this is one of my favorite tools on steemit
Howdy!
I tried many different things, but they all took ages and it would be weeks before any recent data would be available.
I changed tactics and am bringing in January data first, full update at https://steemit.com/steemdev/@shaunmza/steem-followers-january-2018-data-is-rolling-in
Hi @shaunmza I used this daily, and now I see it is not working for quite a while! What's happening?
https://steemit.com/steemdev/@shaunmza/steem-followers-status-update
I created a post for that
Am trying to get it back up.
Please let me know when it is up! :) Miss it!
I changed tactics and am bringing in January data first, full update at https://steemit.com/steemdev/@shaunmza/steem-followers-january-2018-data-is-rolling-in
This is very helpful
"steem.makerwannabe.com is currently unable to handle this request."
what happened?
Great... It is what i am looking for as steemit doesn't have this very important stats. Thank you man...
I found this post very helpful, thank you.
Hey, how do you figure out the order though? It looks like its alphabetical and I want to find my 1000th follower
