I did vote for a witness who paid me, but I did it because I thought he was doing good. I don't think he was making a lot, but he opted to share some of his profits with those who supported him. Unfortunately he was bullied into stopping this scheme. It's no big deal to me as it was only cents per week. The fact is that certain witnesses wield a lot of power here and they will use it to their own benefit. Some of them sell votes and they don't want that market disturbed. They may choose to accept that they are supporting users who are harming the image of steemit. That said, some of these people have been known to withdraw votes and blacklist users when they are informed of abuse. The system is not perfect and self interest is a powerful force. We can at least use our witness votes to have some influence.

I do remember the witness you are referring to. I thought he meant well, but it did not seem sustainable to me. Granted, he was flagged to death, so he literally had to stop, it was not the market per say.
I keep on learning, almost weekly that most people are not too informed of what a witness is supposed to be doing in the first place, hence why this subject will probably never go away.
I've done a few posts about witnesses and why people should vote. I support those who I see doing good things for the platform.
