Dealing with the low bandwidth problem! - A must read for anyone starting

in #steem7 years ago

Every morning I wake up, I open the blinds to let the sun shine on my face, I drink 2 coffees and take a cold bath, as soon as I’m dressed I’m ready to begin the day.
Now, in a normal day I would go to classes, but right now I’m on vacations so I can dedicate all my time to what I love, fitness and steemit, since I workout in the evening as soon as I get dressed I open up my laptop and start answering comments, and reading some posts, making some friends and life is great, BUT THEN THE BANDWIDTH NIGHTMARE BEGINS.
bandwidth limit exceeded- post.png

Every day I run out of bandwidth around 14:00, I go from 1mb to around 100kb, and even though I’m not posting, commenting or doing any actions on steemit my bandwidth is always negative.

What is bandwidth and how it works?

Well, from what I’ve read on some steemit posts about bandwidth I’ll try to explain it in a very simple way.
Imagine a river, that river has always the same amount of water going through it, and each time you want to do anything on steemit you have to drink a portion of that river, now depending on the amount of SP you have you can drink more or less water, so whales(people with lots of SP) can drink lots of water and are top priority, while minnows( people with less SP) can drink less water and are less of a priority. When there are only 1 or 2 whales and a couple of minnows the amount of water is enough for everyone, everything is ok, there is plenty for everyone, but when the river gets full of minnows, whales and dolphins trying to drink that water there is less for everyone, remember the water flowing through the river is always the same amount.

So everyday the river gets full of people at around 14:00pm GMT, everyone is trying to drink from it, I searched around google and guess what? It’s the time when the USA wakes up, you Americans!

What did I do?

Well a quitter would be angry as hell, screaming at the world, shouting from the rooftop something like “MOM, THE BIG WHALES DON’T LET ME PLAY WITH THEM” OR “SCREW YOU GUYS, I’M GOING HOME”-Eric Cartman, he would turn off his laptop, and go play videogames saying that steemit is stupid and that it had no future, well I’M NO QUITTER!

I’m no quitter, my dad and mom didn’t raise a quitter and I’m not about to become one, my first thought was to buy some SP, but when I started this steemit journey I told myself that I wasn’t going to put any money in this, and that I wouldn’t use bots to upvote myself, I want to be recognized for my own work, my own content, and my own bad writing skills, and so you know what I did? Well here is a photo:

Yes, that’s right, right now I have about 27 comments ready to be posted, all of them are original, funny, and add something to the post, none of them are spam, I always read the post before commenting, I’m just waiting for all of this people to leave “the river” so I get some bandwidth and start posting, I also took the time to write this awesome post that you are reading.
So as you can see I worked around the problem, and found a fix for it, I advise anyone that is new to steemit and that is always running out of bandwidth to do the same, the river might be full of people at the moment, but sooner or later they will leave, and then we can drink tons and tons of water from the river.
By the time I could actually post this I had already written another 5 comments.

If you made it this far into the post thank you for reading it, and remember, DON'T BE A QUITTER!

hmm strangely enough I've never checked this subject out and I've been here for 6 months haha. wish I could help brother but I'm sure I could point you to someone who can @teamsteem would be a solid person to ask. you can find him in discord app and message him. he's the f**ng man. I will be your friend and supporter though:) following you now.

Thanks my friend, yeah, small minnows have this problem, since i only have around 10 SP atm i run out of bandwidth pretty fast, unless it's nighttime. And i guess today (sunday) is even worse than most days, i woke up at 12:00 with negative bandwidth already, only now at 19:35 can i post all the stuff i wanted during the day

Nice, absolutely a great tactic for folks on the road, as well. You can pile up saved documents, pictures, video edits and more in your computer and wait for the right times to post i.e. when you can get internet and have sufficient bandwith.

Go look at my last hour of comments, i did all the comments that i wanted to do in the day

Haha it's pretty ironic you posted about this, I was thinking exactly the same the other day... the amount of times I run out of bandwidth for hours on end when I haven't even been posting is sooo annoying. Like, I try to reply to people ASAP so it just gets on my nerves when Steemit won't let me haha. Good analogy you used there too, love a good analogy to explain things haha. :)

Yeah dude, the first answer that i couldn't do was to your question in my last post xD had to wait until now so, i had to wait 10 hours just to answer to your comment on my post

I'd be interested to know a techie or a Steemit veterans opinion on the scalability of Steemit... Like I mean, would this issue potentially get far, far worse if Steemit was adopted by the mainstream and saw a 50x increase in user-base or something.

I suppose it'd just counterbalance because they'd just have to fork into a more efficient blockchain, or host more witnesses or something? Idk I try to understand the tech but some of it I don't understand 100% yet.

I also tried to understand the tech, especially where the money comes from, they loan the virtual assets, something like that, it's a little hard to understand.
I saw a post somewhere on steemit, can't find it anymore, that said if witnesses wanted they could raise the bandwidth, so maybe they will do that later...
Trying to keep up with all this new techs, and new coins, it's overwhelming

Tell me about it haha, how I'm going to remember most of these top 100 coins in detail I have no idea, it's not too bad at the moment because I can commit a decent amount of time to research etc. but when I'm working full-time I'll have to prioritize other things more.

Yup, i know exactly what you mean, i'm on a 1 week vacation from university, as soon as i start again i won't be able to write any comments, i'll try to do a post every week at least, but between university, having a social life, gym, i run out of time... we should start a petition to increase the amount of hours a day has, from 24h to 30 hours minimum

haha yes definitely, or magic up some miracle to make it so that we don't need to sleep anymore, that'd be an extra 8 hours a day

Yup-yup, this is what I did! I wake up at 1 pm every day and everything is clogged for a few hours, so I just write the comments, go eat something, take a shower, then come back and post them. :) Although it's very annoying! I can't wait till I have lots more SP to have a lot of bandwidth. :D

Go look at my last hour of comments, i was posting 2 comments per minute! And it's great because since i post my daily blog at the same time i comment on other people posts, most of them come here and look at my post
I also can't wait to get more SP, it takes time, but i'm sure with good quality content we will make it, especially if the good content are well written stories😊😊

Gracias por la recomendación! Buena táctica :)

No problem, me espanol no eres muy bueno pero puedes comentar en espanol quando usted quiser que yo comprendo
I think i wrote that right, my spanish is kinda rusty, i haven't practiced spanish in 7 years, but my language is very similar, Portuguese

Great piece you got here✌@teutonium followed and upvoted💪

Thank you, it's a shame not many people saw it, i was trying to motivate people not to give up on steemit

Wow! Your writing skill is amazing! I enjoyed reading it a lot! I did not know what is bandwidth at all. Thank for this article :) Keep it up, up!!

Thanks so much, that meant the world to me, i haven't practiced english in a really long time, 7 years to be more exact, i actually started writing blogs on steemit because i wanted to practice english.
Well now you know what bandwidth is, waiting for you to post something so i can read it, especially if it is vegan posts, i always like to give my 2 cents about veganism and vegetarianism

Really! I would say you are English person who is writing it. Perfect!
:) I did not write anything now but I will see what I can do about it:)

Not english, but i do whoever have a First Certificate of English from Cambridge, and i've been in contact with english since i was a child, i always watched movies and tv shows without the subtitles so that i could better understand it, never had much practice in writing though, only on the ocasional online game, and i'm awful at speaking it, i start stuttering even though i know the words xD

I am an Indian and grown up watching hollywood movies in subtitles just to improve english, same as you I am too not good at speaking in english. Maybe because my memory recalling power os below than average people. I loved your attitide, you are soon going to be a legend here 😀

Thanks my friend, i sure hope so!

Very informative post....!
