Yeah, pretty much you have to do something like Coinbase for BTC then here on Steemit you can get a deposit address for the BTC.
As far as best rate, wait till the value is low and buy. There is no real secret to getting more for less.

I hear you on that, I just mean for transaction costs. Like I mentioned one site was REALLY bad. It was like 4x the rate.
You could try Poloniex. Or Blocktrades.us (the one I prefer).

You are welcome. I have never had a problem with Blocktrades. I have tried Poloniex and well, I learned I am no day trader.
