After a tumultuous year away from WWE since her last match in June of 2016, Paige's windy road filled with scandal and physical rehabilitation from a neck injury cold lead to an unlikely return to her current employer.
Paige has been tweeting her former Total Divas sistren about an impending return to WWE. Paige followed up in a recent interview with the Busted Open radio show where she claimed to return "sooner rather than later."
Since going down with injury, Paige paled around with an enemy promotion, was the subject of several concerning news stories alongside equally radioactive boyfriend Alberto El Patron and was essentially a public relations disaster for the world wide leader.
At one point where it was reported that she had very likely wrestled her last match in WWE.
But with a $17.5 million Paige biopic on deck, a movie co-produced by The Rock, Paige's unique situation seems to have granted her somewhat of an immunity that, against all odds, has kept her employed.
Paige and Alberto El Patron's drama outside of the ring, which has garnered her national attention from outlets like TMZ, translated to ratings success for GFW
On the heels of their domestic disturbance controversy at an Orlando Airport, GFW's 322,000 viewers represented the highest viewership of 2017 for the secondary promotion.
On a grander scale in WWE, whether the promotion ignores her issues outside of the ring or not, fans will be quite interested to see the direction of one of pro wrestling's premier lighting rods.
Women in wrestling have proven to be a draw in Paige's absence. Last year, a Raw main event pitting Charlotte against Sasha Banks helped the broadcast score the second-highest ratings since the beginning of the NFL season.
Charlotte and Banks went on to headline Hell in a Cell, marking the first time women ever headlined a WWE pay-per-view. With Paige in the mix, a division that has been on the rise will only become more interesting. In fact, Paige might be a better fit on SmackDown Live as part of a smaller roster that could use a boost.
If WWE moves forward with its high-risk, high-reward proposition of bringing Paige back, the payoff could be incredible provided Paige's very publicized problems are behind her.
