RE: Rio Olympic Sites Crumbling

in #steem8 years ago

It's crazy, isn't it? How irresponsible for a government like Brazil to take on this kind of debt to build this and then have it waste away like this. It's all about money, man. They figure it would bring in thousands and thousands of foreigners who would bring money into Brazil. But how long does the Olympics last? a few weeks? and then it's done. It's a joke.

It used to be billed as an opportunity for host cities to show off and advertise themselves to the world. To build infrastructure like roads and transit like trains and subways that they'd have after the games. To have new sporting facilities and such but the fact is..if they wanted those things or needed them they should/could just build them. The Olympics doesn't guarantee them revenue mostly just crushing debt. Security like I wrote is 2 billion! That's crazy. Cities are getting smarter and actually pulling their bids out. It's a hot button topic because Calgary in my country is thinking about trying to host again. Last time they had the winter Olympics it was actually successful and they have alot of the venue's already existing but imo and alot of others it's just not worth it. There are actually very few examples of cities hosting the games and profiting from it. The IOC rules are too strict on what the host cities have to do..until they change that and scale it back the debt is going to crush whoever hosts them. Most cities just can't afford it..Brazil definately couldn't!

Sounds like it's just for their "ten minutes of fame." Of course the government of whichever city would love the publicity, but the accounting later would give me a nightmare lol.
