I think the role you have played also makes a difference.
If you feel that your words may have influenced some and now you have new information, it would be important to me to ensure that I had let my following know. Trust matters to me.

I agree with this, if you were leaving because you learned something or saw something that made you change your mind about something you had been saying publicly, it may be beneficial to say so. The trust thing is spot on imo.
Not closure or so people can pat you on the back, but because people have listened to you and if something has changed, they deserve to know.
