Steem Works for Me - How I judge it.

in #steem7 years ago (edited)

When the price is low and new projects are getting a lot of attention it is normal to question where you are spending time and effort.  I often question myself on this.

Speaking for myself, I hold many Cryptocurrencies, most of them rise and fall on the speculation market.  They are often victims of quick news stories, Bitcoin and the hype that young markets are driven by.

An advantage that Steem holds for me is the ability to use to my Stake to gain more stake.  I can't do that with PowerLedger, Skychain or EOS.    Whatever I hold in nearly all my other projects just stays the same, and the value goes up and down with the price.  Also, on Steem, I am a part of the community and I get to know and work with others that are holding Steem.  I like that, it gives me a mostly false sense of participation.  :)

This may not be true for miners and developers, maybe they have more influence in other projects, but with the skill set I have, my best bet is to maximize my holdings on Steem.

Many people here seem to focus on what everyone else is doing and earning, I am not concerned if others are getting rich or not earning.  It doesn't concern me because I learned life isn't fair a long time ago, and I also learned I can't control what other people decide to do.  For me what matters comes down to am I enjoying earning whatever I earn here and whether or not I am missing other opportunities by focusing my energy here.

SteemIt, Inc. is working on the Steem blockchain, they are not working on the Steemit.com community.  And I am glad.  They are not going to change the trending page or control people's stake or flag bad actors.  That is the job of the community, not Ned or SteemIt, Inc.  They are building SMTs and Communities and the future.  I don't care that they don't manage the community and if they did, I would probably be annoyed.

Most of the "issues" that become hot topics are fun to talk about, but are either out of my control or non-factors to me.  I enjoy reading and interacting on the site.  I love the odd and volatile conversations on SteemSpeak.   I recognise as we grow we are going to get many new users and types and there will always be people who are not cut out for crypto, freedom, start ups and mess that comes along with young projects.  (I am also not worried about retention, this is a non-factor at this stage)

I watch the Witnesses fight about Witness issues, but for me, if the system is creating competition for the Witness Positions and we have plenty of people willing to run mining equipment the system is working.  The content creators fight about what is Quality Content, I say the conversation is a waste of time, the beauty is in the eye of the beholder.  I don't read fiction online, I don't watch vlogs.  That doesn't mean others don't.  I do like memes, dank jokes and commentary, and many other topics not everyone does.  The more types of content we can facilitate the better.

I understand that paying people for content is a risky business model, and I accept the risk.  I've mentioned before that many companies have tried and failed at paying for content.  If you had to take a dollar bill out of your pocket to read someone's article how often would you choose to do it?  We aren't used to paying for content directly, it is usually paid for with advertisements.  In this environment a good part of the value of content is being supported by speculation and investment in the cryptocurrency, Steem.  This is why I do not lose sleep over whether or not our content selection model is perfect or not.  Of course it isn't, this is a stake based system - the amount of Steem that you hold gives you influence.

I can't close this rambling view without touching on EOS.  So far, EOS is not competing with Steem directly on any level other than the currency.  I know there is a a lot of hype around the project and torn loyalties and all.  I don't have any loyalties to Ned or Dan.  I can find positive qualities and things I dislike about both of them.  I am not spending my days trying to support Ned or Dan.  At the point EOS puts out a project that competes with Steem, I will likely evaluate it.  In order to change where I put my energy I would have to walk away from a lot of work I have done here.  So, it would have to be pretty engaging.  I do hold both Steem and EOS.  For now EOS goes up and down without any input from me, just like my other holdings.

It is a young product in a young market space, it is messy, subject to change and high risk.  Play at your own risk.

How do you judge whether or not Steem is worth your energy?

@whatsup

Sort:

It's worth my energy because I enjoy it. If I stop enjoying it it will stop being worth my energy. It's nice that I make a little bit of money here but I certainly don't consider this my main job. It is weird when I see so many people that do consider their main job though.

I hope it continues to be as awesome as it is now for a long time in the future. There are so many parts of it that I like including posting and being a part of Steemspeak. Will it always be like this? I don't know but I'm enjoying it now which is why I judge it as awesome.

That is how I feel about it also. It works while it works and when it doesn't.. We gave it a shot! :)

Conspicuous. You just so right.

Are any of your other coins really backed by anything or do you even transact much with any of your other coins?

This place by far beats any forum i was relegated to because fedbook blocked me.
None of those i was on had more than 4 or 5 long term members, and they were rather dedicated to their insularity.
Not friendly to ideas outside their own box, for the most part.

We could do with some more dissent here, but the corporate speakers keep them run off, mostly.
They sure aint supporting things they disagree with in the interests of stirring debate.
The circle jerking is strong here.

But, so far, other than getting booted from some discords for the sin of speaking truth to the power, ive been well tolerated.
Even supported, by some.

That says something good about the members that make up the community.

I like the way steemit works, getting paid directly for the content you post and the interaction with it vs getting a cut of advertising revenue just seems like a better model.

Although yes sometimes I do getting writer's block or I start get discouraged, I do still consider it very worth my energy. It may flop or not,who knows. But if it doesn't I see it being among the top coins. Also Im finally seeing what people meant when they were saying that it gets easier to earn steem when prices drop heavily. So with that info im trying to post daily or even twice if possible. lol

Yep, just keep on posting. :)

Thats the plan :)

Can you please explain how posting daily earn you steem when the price drops? @ange.nkuru

When the prices go below a certain level you get more SP relatively to the SBD you'll get after payout. Also im sure that by now you have noticed that you also get some steem in addition to the SP and SBD. It also happens the closer the prices of steem and SBD get. At least that's how I understand it all :)

I'm so new on here that I don't even understand HOW people are making money on here... I mean, I made a few posts and I up-vote what I like and I get the one or two up-votes now and again but as for how the monetary value (or even the reputation points system) work, I just don't get it.

My intro post got quite a few replies and votes and I made $0.07. Yeay! Then, one day, I noticed I have the same number of replies and votes but the post is now worth only $0.05. Huh? How does that work?

But, fortunately for me, I don't care about that stuff. My own blog was discontinued years ago cause I had nobody coming to my site to read it. I don't want to be one of those sites that exist exclusively to re-post content from other sites just so I can show ads along with it... so what do I do? I simply don't post anywhere.

To me it is not about getting loads of followers or massive volume of traffic to my site, it's about getting people to read what you have to say. That is why, when I write something I always write so much that people would want 3 TLDR versions per post... but I never post unless I have anything to say. It might not be interesting to many but it is something I want to share and I would want that seen by people who would find it interesting to read... getting 10,000 uninterested page loads, yawn.

Telling you what I had for breakfast... why in the world would you care? If you do a search for something and after 5 sites that had the exact same article world for word you finally come to my site and find the same article there yet again, repeated word for word... That frustrates the living daylights out of me and I would imagine others feel the same. I don't want to be that guy. I'd rather keep my views to myself or stay anonymous rather than being someone who's sole purpose is to have a website that just pulls content from other places JUST to get people to my site so I can get advertising money. That is just not me.

I only found out about Steemit after I got my login details for DTube. I went "Oh, so I have an account here now? Okay, let me check it out" and so far the people here seem pleasantly welcoming... I feel people are receptive to what people want to say and it is a great place to say what you have to say when you have something to say...

As such, I enjoy using Steemit as a way to reach out to others (and to find interesting stuff to read as well). With only that, I am happy here. If I make (literally) a few pennies here or there, hey, what do you know!? Apart from that I not only DONT understand how this money thing works, I also don't care...

Steemit works for me because I already have an audience for whatever I have to say. What more could any blogger want? All I have to do is make sure I don't become a nuisance to have around and then all is well with the world.

Personally, I DO get depressed when I see my posts don't interest anyone, sure (I want hundreds of up-votes per post 😎😅), but the money part absolutely doesn't even factor into why I am here.

That's just my two cents (pun intended 😅😜). If other people do this as their day job, well good for them, I guess... and now I return to my dark, silent corner of Steemit ...

Wow.....worth reading. Though, you don't care because your earnings or loving is not somewhat depended on steem. Some persons life just a mess and coming across steemit was a dream come true

Am I gaining Steem and SP?
Am I finding interesting people and having interesting discussions?

  • Too many people spend too much time trying to figure out what others should do here on Steemit.

You have a healthy attitude. I'm happy enough that I earn something and I can't do much about others who make much more with junk posts. Life isn't fair, but you can try your best.

The existence is pretty fair actually. Life spare no one. Everything is balanced depending on what our ancestors did and their karma.

One problem I personally have is I wasn't active enough when SBD was way up and didn't accumulate enough steem for powering up. Now I struggle bcs of upvotes being worthless.
On the other hand, I'm trying to save up money and buy steem so I can power up as I see this as a good opportunity to do so.

Great post!

Forget about upvotes. That will take years to build up. As a new user you should be focusing on a solid content strategy. That will say create 10x more content than others. Stuff that people are interested in. On a daily basis! 5-10 pieces of content per day!

You have to find some niche you can totally dominate in and be the best in the world at. Forget about the stake you have as well. Solid content strategy should be your primary focus as a beginner. That is your biggest asset right now. And your Time and Attention.

Then you can look at leverage capital and connections. But the work is the most important above all. Since that is the category that is easiest to get leverage in as a new user.

This is the best advice I can get anywhere. I will see to this!!! @phoneinf
Thank you and God bless you

There is still time! I think we might have a slow summer. (of course I don't know) But just chip away at it and I totally encourage buying in early and pulling your investment as your account grows.

In my case, i can easily evaluate that Steemit is worthful for my efforts because, before I've put more efforts than Steem on other platforms for many months but i got Zero. But, after working on this platform I've had great journey with effective rewards too, then for me there is no case to choose Steemit against any other platform.

May be Steem have pros and cons but we have to evaluate the result and in my opinion no platform gives this kind of result where you can enter with zero investment and you can create surprising Steem Portfolio. And there are many who can give positive Testimony because Steemit affected masses positively.

Thanks for sharing this post with us and wishing you an great day. Stay blessed. 🙂

I used to focus on others rather than myself and now I learned , I’m even fine making $2 a post, that’s $2 more in my pocket than I had

I think many lose site of this. If you can get two dollars for something you used to get nothing for... That is a win.

I also, got caught up with the "Not fair" group for a while, and then I got over it. :)

Well i come here for the drama.

And you're never disappointed!

Nice post! I often wonder about the amount of time and energy I'm spending here, and if it's worth it. To me, it seems a bit all or nothing; consistency and interaction are everything, and if you fall off, it seems hard to get back up again. Still building my account up, methinks Steemit and Ono will be main foci this summer.

The international version of the Ono dapp on EOS is dropping June 25, just so you know. Something to look out for.

I would say it's worthy energy because it's shown that it's one for the future, one mustn't judge it the current state, the truth is cryptocurrency has it rise and fall but I believe STEEM is credible

I like the way you look at things. Seems rather healthy to me.

Steemit being a community still makes me want to make the most out of said community. For better or worse.

i buy some sbd at the 2.59$ rate by collecting pocket money but now market is very low sir@whatsuo when the rate will rise

I don't know when the market will recover. SBD is manipulated. If you are buying in, I suggest buying Steem. Of course everyone has different goals.

Apparently, so many ups and downs have been going on on steemit for a while especially the low price if steem, all the same we are still waiting for the Smt's to come out.

steemit should actually be a side hustle to most of us.

This is so true.

It doesn't concern me because I learned life isn't fair a long time ago, and I also learned I can't control what other people decide to do. For me what matters comes down to am I enjoying earning whatever I earn here and whether or not I am missing other opportunities by focusing my energy here.
If everyone can adapt this mindset, it would be great for us all. No one really can control what others decide to do

Why is this?

I don't care that they don't manage the community and if they did, I would probably be annoyed.

Thats just a fact. I read post of people complaining about quality content when is is actually subjective. What may be quality to someone may just be another junk post to me

If you had to take a dollar bill out of your pocket to read someone's article how often would you choose to do it?
Not very often. In fact, I don't think anyone will want to do it at all. It is very true that the amount of steem one holds is actually the key.
